Someone on another board posted this, he (j4yj4y) found it in some article or something.
Thought some f you might find it intresting.
Not sure if it goes here or in music discussion though.
But it could go in either I guess..
Scientists invent electronic DJ
Disc jockeys may soon have electronic rivals
Scientists in Bristol say they have designed the world's first disc jockey with artificial intelligence.
It would be able to create and mix its own dance music and react to the mood of clubbers.
The system has been developed at the Hewlett Packard (HP) laboratories.
The inventors say the electronic "hpDJ" would be able to select different beats and base lines from its own memory bank, mix them and even sample other tracks.
I realized a lot of the techniques used in artificial intelligence could automate what DJs do
Dave Cliff, HP scientist
At the same time it would respond directly to clubbers using a unique biofeedback system.
Dancers wearing remote sensors would send signals to the computer DJ, letting it know when they were bored with the music and wanted it changed.
Dave Cliff, a scientist at HP in Bristol and part-time disc jockey, invented the hpDJ.
He said: "I muck around as a DJ in my spare time and realized that a lot of the techniques used in artificial intelligence could be used to automate what DJs do.
Digital format
"I wondered if we could invent software so people could use a home PC to create DJ-mixed compilations with no gaps between the tracks."
Once the tracks have been chosen and loaded into a computer in digital format, the hpDJ program analyzes each track.
Dave Cliff came up with the idea for the hpDJ
A club DJ typically builds tempo gradually, placing slower numbers at the end.
In the same way, the computer programme measures tempo in beats per minute to decide on an order for the tunes.
The system also imitates a real DJ by altering the tempo, slowing down or increasing the speed of the music to make a seamless mix.
The computer actually stretches out the beats to make them match from track to track.
"The human brain is not very good at recognizing small changes in the number of beats per minute, and this is the sort of thing that a computer does really well," said Mr Cliff.
So what do you guys think? |

| no offense, but i think it's a load of . what is the point of that? everything is so artificial these days, i hate the word....that's all i have to say about that:) |

Yeah I read something about this, I don't remember anything about sensing the boredness of clubber though :0 There's been a machine doing that for a while, it selects tracks from a huge playlist and creates a set in the same way a DJ would and mixes them itself.
This one is connected to club sensors though so it can measure the amount of people on the dancefloor and the temperature of the club etc, and movement iirc to see when people are dancing and adjust the set accordingly.
Don't see the point myself, I'd think even the most amature DJ would be able to do a better job of both mixing & reading the crowd but it'd be interesting to see/hear it in action to see what it came up with. |

Interesting but very strange.
For clubs that don't wanna spend the money every weekend to pay real DJ can use this but then peeps will get bored I think. I personally go to clubs to see the DJs not machines. And what about requests, those wouldn't work. |

A SIDE of the post:
What move people toward dance clubs / rave / partys and so on ?
I feel personally attracted to
. well humoured / intelligent people
. charismatic DJ
. beauty / esthetic pleasure
. dancing
B SIDE of the post:
(as a computational math student)
AI could be of great help for the human DJ. Have you ever thought of the notes of a song you want but have no ideia of where it is (in the middle of 400 discs, or a 80 gb HD, you got the IDEA) and then having the AI helper managing to find and play the exact tune in the very exact location of the track you want, at the very moment you trigger it ?
That would be mental/music jockey - MMJing instead of DJing - and would set us free from many material limitations - like # of decks, vynil vs mp3s, mixers, $$$, etc...
Also, we would be able to handle musical constructions in a higher degree of complexity, and treat music content in a more fluid way.
Maybe those who dream about expanding the conscience boundaries and our interface with the world may find these ideas very nice(ssary).
Just another drop :D
In case we (the humankind) get able to create VIRTUAL & INTELLIGENT "LIFEFORMS", in case they are complex enought to dialog/learn/enjoy/hate/etc, would their DJ mix be less worth than the human-generated one ?
These were just free thoughs.. don't flame me for this.
I feel myself inclined to welcome any progress in the cognitive sciences frontier. BTW This post remembers me of "Do androids dream of eletric sheep ?" :D :D :D |

| It's .. no machine can be a real DJ, you need brain, soul, feeling for this... it's just a lame thing to make. |

Ok. here goes my reply:

:D :D :D :D :D :D
I believe there will be a time when you won't be sure with WHAT or WHO you're talking to. And that's near... |
