Philippe, aka. Preach,
As many of you know Preach is going to be leaving in the next month to move to Europe to further his music career, so this is a going away thread that is dedicated to one dj that has changed the scene for ever… not only in Montreal, but he has changed the entire techno scene throughout the world and will continue to do so as he progressively gets better each day. We have watched him grow from when he took residency at Aria a couple of years ago, some have watched/listened longer. His style, energy, and the sheer beat of his music have commanded the dance floors of many clubs, events, venues, ect. We all will be sad that he is going away from Montreal, but as I said, he is going away… not leaving, one would define going away means that one would eventually return, which I know he will eventually return because there is no other city in the world quite like Montreal even when forgetting about the music scene.
I will share one quick little story on how great of a person Preach really is. I have been enjoying the music scene in Montreal for about 5 years now from when I started listening to electronic music. Where I started out was at the original Sona in the beginning till they shut down and then started going to Aria more often and have been going out there up until I have moved to NYC just a bit more than a week ago, I went to many other clubs and have attended a dozen or so different events/parties in Montreal and I have grown to love the great sound of the Montreal music “which is quite different from music in other cities”. Now back to the quick story I was going to tell you, sorry if I got off pace… but anyways the last few times I have gone to Aria since January this year I have made it a point to stop in and see Preach and say hello, “you know… great set man” just the normal stuff, and we have traded a few messages in passing. When I learned that he was going to be playing in NYC just this past weekend I made sure that I was going to be there, no matter what it was going to take, I was going. So I went to the show, which was in the small pub type place with about 30 people at the height of the show “it was a small event, everyone knew everyone “everybody was having a great time”” but when he came in, I went up to him again to introduce myself, but he remembered meeting me before at Aria and was wondering what I was doing in NY? We chatted for a bit, he went on and we talked for a bit after the show and then ended up meeting the next day to chill out in the city… “Which to me was like if a teenager that loves pop music got to hang out with their favorite artist” way cool man!! Mad props ;-) So for this to happen to me is like walking on cloud 9!! Not only did I get to see my favorite artist before he goes away for a bit, I got to hang out with him and made some new friends. So the moral of this story is that I do think that not every dj that has had the success or is about to blow up with success the way that he is going to would give the time of day to someone that they really don’t even know… but like I said in the beginning of my little story that has gone longer than I planed “I will share one quick little story on how “great” of a person Preach really is.”
So that is my quick little tribute, and I can’t wait to see you spin again and can’t wait to hang out with you again next time you are in town “Montreal or NYC”
Best of luck to you in your travels, I know you will do well, and remember… you have worked hard for this in getting better with each show and producing some great new music, and you do deserve what is coming to you in the near future.
Best regards,
~Matthew~

What a great post. I've never actually met the guy, but all I can say is if his sets are anything like the man, he's incredible. It's unfortunate news that Preach is moving away, but, I rest assured knowing that I had some awesome nights thanks to Preach.
This is a name that I am sure, one hundred percent sure, will live on for years to come. I look forward to seeing him in a few months (or a few years) back at aria, spinning for his home town.
Stay safe, be good, and enjoy Europe. Montreal will miss you, especially the TA's. :(
(Edit: So, can anyone confirm that he is definitely leaving next month?) |

Thanks for all the great memories Preach, you will really be missed.
I will alway remember the smile on your face when you were playing at Aria one night and I handed you my "It's a Crime EP" from the crowd. Iv never seen someone so happy to take the time to give a signature.
Anyway, I wish you the best of luck and always remember that your hometown will be rooting for you. |
