Anyone know how to go about starting a radio station?

I mean a REAL radio station?
IMHO (and I'm sure you'll all agree), Montreal radio SUCKS ASS....:mad: and we're in DIRE need of an electronic music station. Especially since Montreal is a leading electronic music city.
Does anyone know how to do this? I know it costs money, I know it aint easy to do, I just wanna see what steps are involved in something like this, and if anyone is interested in taking on such a project....

| Jesteraver was interested in starting up an all EDM music station here in Mtl. I'm not sure if he still is, but if not there are more than enough people here willing to help, including me. :P |

| You can buy radio kits over the internet (this page looks pretty godd, but it's also the first one that popped up on google...) ) and you can broadcast anywhere in the city. You don't need to be licensed if you're under 50 watts but you won't come anywhere close if you are trying to set this thing up in your apartment (say, closer to ten watts). 50 W is like a major pole and a lot of electricity, so that costs a bundle. 10 W will give you a broadcast range of about a klik in any direction, so if you live in a strategic place, like the plateau or in Pt. St. Charles, you will be able to get a lot of listeners. OK, the reason why I haven't done this is because: 1) I don't have the time to learn how to solder (maybe this summer...) and 2) I don't have enough stuff to constantly play (not even a useable computer so I could let 'er rip). If anyone starts one of these, let the rest of us know so we can tell friends, etc. Yes, radio in this city blows chickens. The kits will usually cost about $200 - $300. OK, the radio free berkely site has everything else that you want... |

Nifty link. Now just need to contact the CRTC. Contact DJ's and other streaming radio stations to see if we can re-air their sets, etc. We got to get together a couple of us, who wants to get this off the ground. |

| You don't need to contact the CRTC if it's under 50 W. All you need is to find a frequency that no one else is using and hide your amps, transmitters, and run an antennae up something inconspicuous. Remember: this is pirate radio. Do you really want to pay licensing fees and worry about infringing copyrights? Dude, you're providing a necessary service to this community. I would work on this piece later on in the summer (gotta do school and my magazine first) but it's gonna cost some cash. The radio free berkeley site has their own, home-made wares and they're pretty reasonably priced - like $2000 for the entire kit. Thing is: with recent months of hendonistic activity in this very decadent town has left me close to destitute. If you want to do this, find some schmuck with lotsa expendable cash and milk it dry... |

Hmmm....that sounds interesting. I mean, if we can get 50W, thats not bad! Gotta have it downtown (I live in Ville St. Laurent, unfortunately). But I'm interested in doing this.
Maybe we can call chip in for a set or something.

| I'm pretty sure I could convince my building owner to let me put a small antenna on the roof, or worst comes to worse we can just climb a tree and hide one on top of Mt. Royal. :P |

| yeah its difinitly a good idea and i doubt you'd run out of music im sure some local ta djs will more then gladly play their sets on the radio.i'd be interested in helping out with some way if needed. |
