Hey guys,
I was wondering if I could get some set up advice. I've worked a bit using a crappy 'dj-in-a-box' vinyl set up and now I'm looking to buy some powerful gear.
I'm thinking of going with CD's, since I really can't afford to buy many vinyls. And with places like Beatport.com offering WAV files for only about $2 each, its the only logical choice for someone with my type of income.
But I have taken into consideration the fact that not all trance tunes get released digitally, and that vinyl still pretty much rules have the market. With that in mind, I made up this set up:
2X Pioneer CDJ-800
1X Technics 1200 (used-$400) OR Numark TT-200 (new-$300) CND
1X Numark DM1002MKII
This way, I can mix CD to CD, CD to Vinyl... and when I need to go from Vinyl to Vinyl, I can simply use a digital recording i'll make of all my vinyls.
Should I pay the extra $100 and go with the Technics, even though they're used? (Used technics are being purchased from a dj store, not through ebay, etc.)
If I learn on the CDJ800, could I easily adjust to other cd players out there?
Please give me some general input on what you think of my set up.
Thank you. |

| Personally, I would go with the used tech. I have the TT200's and love them, however, I regret not waiting for the techs. They'll both get the job done, just one will do it with less WOW&Flutter and will be a hell of a lot sexier. |

For me the pitch increment is the most important things along with the hundreds of people on these boards. Take a look around, jsut because it says pioneer doesnt always mean its the best bet to go with. I haev the 800's i love them and i dont regret them. Then again there are newer players coming out with better pitch accuracy. Stantons have a new player...check those out they are light blue and white. Look pretty neat.
Technics.
Mixer....dont go for 2 channels if youre buyign 3 things. And dont spoil yourself with the mixer too. I find its best if you buy worse equipment as a beginnger...then as you progress in skill you buy better equipment. That way you can actually appreciate how much better the newer one is. Brings a much funner time along to.
My bet is go with a Vestax or a nice mixer 3-4 channels. Dont buy a Behringer or gemini please. |

CDJ-800's are nice but not nessecarly the cheapest. if that is what you want, get them because they are nice players. i have TT-1650's because i could afford Techincs 1200's at the time but they also do the job:D
about the mixer, jupiterone is right with not being crazy about behringer and gemini. i have the VMX-100 and it is unbelievable how much it sucks. i got it off Ebay, and it is 2nd hand which makes it even worse:whip:
i hear you talking about the DXM03 from numark. that is def. something to shoot for. the only thing about that is that it supports 2 instead of 3 channels unlike the new DXM09 from numark. you might just want to wait a little bit longer and save a little more money to make that step because 3 separate channels with 3 players is a lot easier and 2 separate channels and 3 players.
besides, the DXM09 looks pretty nice IMO. with 2 CDJ-800 and and a Technics... NOT BAD!!!:D :D

first off, i'd say, to avoid the behringer mixers. I say that after owning the vmx300 for 2 years now and it's just getting worse and worse, ever so slightly..... bleeding channels, bleeding pfl/cue, poor stereo quality, dying pre-amps, etc.
go for a numark 3ch mixer or a gemini even, if you wanna stay cheaper. the denon mixers are nice too!
You also may not believe it, but I bought a used Denon DN-S1000 CD-player and it's simply an amazing unit as for features/price. I started as a vinyl DJ and my 2 technics are serving me great, with no drops in precision performance. I recently got the dn-s1000 to keep up with the digital dj market and it's a great unit. I would highly recommend it as a competitor for the CDJ800. If you want to get the gear that clubs are using, then the CDJ1000 is the thing you want. I'm prolly buying one of those soon, just to have a club-standard unit to get used to.... since I already have technics, .... used in clubs..
So just get what's most feasible for the cash. |

Thanks for the advice guys. :)
I guess I'll go with the used Tech's then.
And as for the mixer, yea i guess it would be wiser to go with a 3 channel.... my plan was to go with a 2channel, and when i needed to switch, i'd reach back and switch around the wires... and on second thought thats not a good idea :p
I'll definitely look into the Numark 3Channel mixers and see what i can find.
Thanks again, peace. |

You dont have to reach around and switch anything. Theres a line plugin for your cd players and phono for your turntables. The only switch you'll be flipping is the line / phono switch on your mixer. Unless your gonna be using all 3 channels at once, i'd go with a 2 channel mixer. Just make sure it has phono / line which basically all do. I just picked me up the pioneer djm 707 and for $300, its definitly worth it. |

Really? wow, okay thanks a lot for the info man.
That saves me some cash from spending on a 3 channel mixer.

Np. Heres a pick of what I mean. You can see where you have channel 1 and channel 2, theres 4 rca plugins'. 2 for your tables, 2 for your cd players.
But yea, if you are gonna wanna use both cd players and the table at the same time which one day you may, then go ahead with the 3 channel. My first mixer was a cheap numark dm3002x that was 3 channels. I never even used the 3rd channel at all and I have 2 tables and dual cd players. |

Yea, I doubt I'm gonna use all three lines at once, and even if i had to, it'd be rare.
Thanks for your help man. :) |

hmm... I've been taking a look at the Numark DM1002MKII
and it says: "Inputs: 2-4 line switchable, 2 phono, 1 mic" - product link: here
I'll be able to hook up my 2 CDJs and Turntable to this right?
And how about this mixer? Is it any good?
btw, are there anymore inputs on this set up, please?
Thank you. |

hey guys,
I'm going to be buying this set up very soon, and I wondering if anyone has any additional input before I go out and get it...
another thing that has come up is the problem of speakers for the system... since I'm running low on cash I was thinking about buying some nice computer speakers, along with a rca to line-in wire, and just have the audio come out of my comp. speakers, instead of spending over $500 CND on speakers + amp (since I don't have an amp, etc.)
If anyone has any input or advice in regards to this dj gear set up, please help me out.
Thanks a lot. |
