My First Gig

Well was tonight . Several problems. The sound guy didn't know how to set the amp or anything so the sound was way loud, crackling and since the amp was so damn loud the mixer was hitting like -7 db tops without going too loud to blow the damn speakers, so i had to change volumes constantly. The DJM 600 had a problem where the right cup on the head phone was louder then the left for so strange reason. We tryed my sony 700 and the pioneer 1000 and got the same thing, so my way of mixing was off. A wobbly table so I had to use the lightest touch, which i dont like. My matching was alright, since the way I mix was off I was too. But I didnt care too much because not too many people showed up. So that was my account. I got over the stage freight.

yeah, i've had similar experiences. try it topping out at less than -24dB, so low it won't show up on the master LED. oh, and no monitor either. so let's see, no monitor, no master cue (well, yeah, but at -24dB, you can't hear it) and a bunch of echo. and i still managed 8 out of 10 mixes nicely. it was hell tho...

Hey man congratulations on your first gig!

Get ready to run into these problems pretty much everywhere e.g. last night we had DJ Lucas Smith on "The Beat Co-Op" here in Point, a solid DJ and a class act I may add, but we definitely had to innovate due to him not being used to the monitors being awkwardly place, but it's all about working through it and finding a solution, you gotta persevere through the BS, and in some cases you'll find you can just rock it in the worst of conditions...

Heh, while I'm thinking of it, I did the midwest TA party a few weeks ago and we had similar problems with the headphones/speakers. There were pretty much no highs coming through the room speakers, so all the highs playing out to the room were coming from my monitors. Now I'm pretty much used to being able to turn the monitors on and off while I'm playing and not having it make a sound out to the room i.e. I can cut the monitors so that I can get a bit more precise sound out of my phones.

Needless to say, from the booth I had no idea that when I was cutting the monitors it pretty much killed any highs/crisp mids playing out in the room, and I'm basically sure everything just sounded awful... but on the upside, I was the opening DJ, playing from 8-9PM so I had pretty much no audience to hear the disaster.

In any event, the best thing I can say is just work throught the rough nights, and think critically about how you can fix the problems with what's readily available...

Cheers,

RJT

Edit: Didn't see this before...

No monitors and you still nailed 8/10? Sir, I humbly bow before you... :eyes:

The worst I had was the obvious delay in the monitors from the sound in the headphones. Had to use both cups, and I am so used to single-ear monitoring. :whip:

These stories seem like serious Dj character makers. I think the worst thing is, you obviously have the skill and not being able to execute your skill due to the way the night was is very frustrating knowing your better then that.

Monitors are nice but not necessary. You can cue off a sound system in a club if need be, just takes practice.

Bottom line with all this is that you shouldn't expect anything to help you DJ and on the contrary should feel exceptionally blessed if someone actually knows how to prepare for a DJ.

Cheers
