aahh well apart from being a mac user, and appreciating well designed things, Microsoft just can't design an operating system if they tried. Long horn..... i mean.... long in the tooth... is going to be so outdated by the time it comes out it's a joke!
That aside, they have done well at monopolising the industry!

And... I CAN compare the hardware because I know for sure that the PS3 will be teh CELL processor, with one CPU unit and 8 vector units. The CELL is the most powerful processor in the world by far. Read some of the whitepapers, its truly an amazing piece of gear. The problem being its extremely hard to code for, but this comes at the tradeoffs of great speed boosts!
The XBOX 2 definitely has a PowerPC CPU, based lightly around the G5 (970). And the irony is that the only machines capable of developing XBOX360 games, are Apple PowerMac G5s, because they have the same CPU.
i am also almost certain that ATI will be supplying the Videochipset for the 360, and it will me embedded eDRAM, kinda like hard cache on a CPU, so it will be extremely fast, and allow huge amounts of data to be pushed through the system. From what i can tell, the video stuff is similar to a PC Radeo X800/X850 video card.,
nVidia is supplying the core video stuff for PS3.
Im not an expert, and I am just gathering my data from very reliable sources on the net. Being a graphics and effects person by trade, I try to keep in the (reliabel) loop as much as possible.
At the end of the say, I think you will see just as much competition between the units as there is with current generation boxes

i think at the least, for once sony will be up NEAR the front (comparitively...) end with the hardware (FOR ONCE IN THEIR ING LIVES - rather than the usual ty cheap outdated hardware for super $$$$, it'll just be semi decent hardware for super $$$$ - a nice improvement from them, and hopefully around on par with what's on offer by xbox2)
if it isn't like that, oh god, even competition from microsoft isn't enough to straighten them up |

I would be VERY suprised if the PS3 isnt better than the xbox in terms of graphics
in other words
the PS3 is going to be by far the powerful machine

playstation 2 owners say the playstation 2 has better graphics than an xbox...
I think it's pretty much gonna be nvidia's latest gfx card with a bit more punch in the ps3, and atilatest gfx card with a bit more punch in the xbox
pretty much the same neck and neck graphics war currently available on the PC
I'm sure when it comes to coding, nvidia are prolly pushing their cg shading crap
with the xbox being microsoft, direct x
either way, it's gonna be interesting to see what each company comes up with, and what each box will be capable of doing |

yeah ageed re: video chipsets
BUT
where the PS3 will destroy the box..... is its 8 vector processors on the CELL chip
they will also be used for graphics, as well as the nVidia stuff
essentially these 8 vector chips could be likened to 8 GPU's from nVidia or ATI... you know.... running in SLI mode. That's a very abstract description, but if coded corectly, thats what they will be like.
Again, it comes down to how well the programmers design their games for it... coders find it hard enough making software that uses two threads for dual CPU.. so imagine 8 way CPU!
Dont get me wrong... I kinda sound like Im defending playstation here... I actually prefer my xbox over PS2... but Im willing to go back to sony if they can impress me enough

are they still LAN "parties" if your home is one big LAN kel? :D haha, and youve got a bit of nerd in you if you even know what a lan party is :p
and to all you console fanboys- games that are ported to the PC look better, run better, are more customizable, more options for controls....the list goes on. :stongue: |

| the fact that xbox kills playstation in the graphics department was one of the main reasons they gained support, so im sure they arn't going to forget that this time around either |

I just picked this stuff up after having geek bfs & living with nerds = house was turned into a lan party on more than occasion :rolleyes:

i would microsoft throwing money around is one the main reasons that xbox gained support. That and its easy as pie to port games from or to PC since its the architecture. Also being easier to develop for.
Though I read a cool thing about SSX (i think) on ps2 though, one of the programmers there used one of the chips on the ps2 for a dedicated surround sound processor in software.
ps - gt4 is great. |
