Quality amp of'course will make a huge difference in sound quality, clearity, sharpness, etc vs. something like a home audio amp or like a bookshelf system.
for around $300.00 there are a few amps to choose from
Crown XLS 202A
Crown XLS 402A
Tapco(by Mackie) J800
Alesis RA300
QSC RMX 850
Behringer Europower EP1500
Behringer Europower EP2500

Do all amplifiers in the low end, say $300 - $400 sound pretty much the same? Another one is Samson Audio, many brands to choose from.
I notice you can get big non-powered speakers at low prices, example about $225 (US) each for a Peavey PR 15 which has a 15" woofer plus a tweeter in a plastic-type cabinet, you put it on a tripod pole stand. A couple of those plus a small amp and you're in business. Less expensive in total than self-powered speakers. |

| If you are powering monitors and not big PA speakers for a party, I am a big fan of the AudioSource Amp One/A. It puts out 80 W per channel and has no fan, this won't rock a big house party but I think in the studio setting it is nice becuase you don't have a fan whirring in the background. It costs about $200 and uses a toroidal power supply, has a great S/N ratio and a low THD. |

so true.
for this reason, if you dont have the loot for a nice new amp, get a nice used amp.
besides, it seems older amplifiers are built better. more metal, beefier transformers, no lame switching power supplies, etc etc.
ab international, qsc, and crown are my preferences.
Another sweet option worthy of mention, is the Rane MA6. It's a 6 channel amp, and you can bridge channels in pairs of two.. each channel is 150 watts, so you can bridge the amp into 3 300watt channels. this is so perfect, because you can drive your mains and your booth monitor off a single amplifier. add a crossover and another amp to power your subs, and you basically have a complete rig minus the speakers.
The MA6, used, is right around your price point, too. |
