Thanks! I hope I'll do well
Also...Soulseek is a p2p file sharing program. Atleast I think that's what it's called...I dunno. I have it, but I don't really understand how to use it. |

I haven't been on it since they upgraded the base program a couple months ago. From what I'm told the new program isn't as good as it used to be, however it's still probably the best file sharing program for EDM.
Right now I'm using a bittorrent community called themixingbowl:
http://themixingbowl.org/forums.php
As I'm downloading all 600+ essential mixes, and they've got a large collection of the early ones. Plus, bittorrent is hella fast. |

| What I'm worried about is that I'm switching to cable internet (from DSL), and there's a 10G cap on combined uploads/downlaods per month. How much do you think I'll be able to download? I'm on MSN all the time, and check my hotmail, but that's about the only thing I use the internet for besides TA and downloading sets. When I talked to the cable lady, she said that most people don't reach the cap, but then I was thinking...well...I bet most people don't download HUGE mp3 files. |

10 gigs, approx 10,000 MB.
So....
each essential mix at 128 kps quality [really anything more than that is unecessary] would be approximately 110 MB. That works out to being 91 essential mixes. Since each essential mix is 2 hours long, that's 180 new hours of music a month.
But since the conversion between gigs and megs isn't exactly 1:1000, the estimate is slightly high. As well, you're gonna want to download slightly less than that so you can at least still browse the web once in a while.
I'm on sympatico, so there are no caps. Downloaded 20 new gigs of music in the last 23 days. |

Are you switching to Sympatico? Even though my plan says I'll be charged if I go over 5 GB d/l and 5 GB u/l (download / upload) per month, I've gone past those figures numerous times without any additional charge.
I'm on their "basic plan" and so for it's been all good.
As for soulseek, the newest version released is better than the past few which have had numerous problems, especially with the search capability. I think their site is http://www.slsknet.org or whatever Sly_Guy put down.
I would go Bit Torrent but all this freakin' security on my computer may conflict with this application so I'm hesitant to switch over.
In any case, I need this Ferry set! :D |

If you're looking for good sets from toronto clubs, keep an eye out for one by Paul Oakenfold at Tonic, as well as Max Graham from tonic.
MC Flipside used to do a show on Chin Radio [100.7] back in the late 90's early 00's, and they often had great DJs playing, but finding the recordings of those shows are a little hard to get.
Also be on the lookout for Tiesto at Wintergalactic 2001(?), another amazing set, although I'd only heard a really crappy copy of the recording, apparently there's a good version of it out there somewhere |
I found the last half-hour of Tiesto's Wintergalactic set on Slsk a while ago and the quality ain't great as Sly_Guy said... I'm trying to find the rest of it but so far, I haven't found it in it's entirety... Didn't someone post here a while back saying they had the CD or something? :conf: |

| That 12th track definitely is System F - Insolation. I heard the song the first time about a month ago and I was wondering why this one is unheard of. So glad it's out there now! |

Orko's got it.....check the thread
It was 2000, not 2001. 2001 was armin van buuren I believe, now that my memory isn't so clouded by alcohol. |

I'm switching to Cogeco...I actually called today and they said that if you go over too many times then they make you switch to the higher package...and my dad said that I'd have to pay the difference, which I really don't want to do.
I guess I could try to limit myself to a download or two a month.
I'll check out the new soulseek though...I just didn't really understnad how to use it. Usually like with Kazaa and stuff, it's self explanatory, but I was confused with Soul Seek b/c everything entered a que. I'll check out the new one though |

Kazaa is absolutely garbage for EDM. To get around these queues on soulseek, set up a paypal account, and donate $5 a month for 'priveledged' status, which puts you at the front of the line for most downloads, as well as gives you much better results in each search you do. I've never done it, but Graham [highroller] swears by it. If I hadn't found themixingbowl, I'd probably have begun to donate myself.
EDIT
I still miss audiogalaxy. The one site where I could always find the rarest of all rare 12" vinyls ripped at 256k quality. Stupid people who liked metallica and eminem got it shut down! |
