`beat tools can also be fun if used properly, i dont know how well it would workin a trance set, but in some of my sets ill drop a funky beat tool and an a capella over than then if i have the resources either add in some samples with my break/scratch records, or another beat tool.

if you give me 3+ cdj 1000s. i will never leave the room.
i got big pants
i love cutting in mixes. cutting = switch to another channel during a high hat. or sometimes after a beat phrase has ended, throw in a part of the track in cueing up, usually the melody. (granted its harder to do this with trance)

also love kicking in the bass every so often just to get that extra "umph" if im about to go into a harder track
dinoXpress
yeah i feel that, and during the breakdown you can add the bass frequencies from your next track so you have like a soft umph from a hard kick fillin in the breakdoen from onw track. on the right track is a lot of fun.

i would start ing around with two tracks in the same key and see if they sound good together when mashed up. that always makes for an interesting mix.

Indeed... or just get a 3rd deck and start playing around with 3 decks. I tend to use a lot of percusive techno to make mixes sound intersting.
It is very important though that it's in a compatible key.

Is there a solid guide to learn how to mix using harmonics out there?
Omega_Blue
i think there's one out there but i don't know the link at the moment. you play any instruments rob? i could probably explain it to you if you have some musical knowledge.. piano? guitar?

Yep, Guitar... I definitely understand about the idea of compatible keys, but is there anything more to it?

hm that's cool then... eh... nope that's about all i know.
except maybe good key progressions?

like... a song in the key of say... C. would progress nicely into a song in the key of D.

*an interval is the difference in pitch between two notes*

if you know intervals, a C to a D is a major second. try it out on the guitar. play a Cmaj, then a Dmaj. it sounds nice.

but play a C, then an... F#... this interval is a tritone... it sounds really dissonant. play a C and an F# at the same time, and it sounds like poo. so if you tried mixing two songs together, one in the key of C and the other in the key of F#, it would sound terrible.

that's mainly what i think it's all about.

intervals that almost always sound good together-

major 2nds- example- base note C, second note D
perfect 5ths- example- base note C, second note G (a power chord)
fourths- example - base note C, second note F

bust it out on your geetar and try it out. pretty much any two notes that make a "consonant" sounding chord will mix together well. it also depends on if the song is minor, or major. you know the difference between those, i'm sure. minor is sad :( and major is happy :gsmile: .

so to sum up, here's some examples of intervals with harmonic mixing.

in PVD's energy 2003 set, for example, he starts out with Digital Pressure - Aftershokk and then mixes into Terry Bones vs. Fred Baker - Introspection.

Aftershokk is in the key of.. around a G# (can't tell if my guitar is in tune atm)
then he drops Introspection, which drops down to the key of F#. this interval is a major 2nd (F# to G# or vice versa). like i said, major 2nds sound good together. try it out on the guitar, you'll hear what i'm trying to say.

then, from Introspection, he throws out Crush...
once again, introspection is in the key of F#, Crush is in the key of Bb. if you play an F# and a Bb together, you'll hear a nice "major" sounding chord. so the progression still sounds nice.

another thing to keep in mind, once you know the key of a song and whether it's major or minor-sounding...

the CMaj scale is.. CDEFGABC
so pretty much, mixing any song that's in the key of CDEFGA or B will sound good when mixed with another song in the key of C except for B, since it's a minor 2nd (or a major 7th, i believe).

and of course, two songs in the same key sound good together.

if you already knew this... i'm gonna feel like a jackass.

...and if anyone needs clarification, i could probably post up some samples for y'all.

Thanks M8... Well structured, and quite valuable... well enough for me to actually read and work through all of that on my guitar...

Thanks again Omega, very helpful...

:whew: i was hoping that made sense. glad you found it useful.

I always try mashing up my tracks and accapellas to keep it fresh. Like putting a deep prog house song behind a trance track. I did that with Paul Van Dyk - Connected (Motomix) and Soul Mekanik - I'll Call You (Thin Red Man Mix) in this mix I did a few months back, sounds pretty cool to me.

I'll also try to get accapellas in there whenever I can. I like throwin in eric morillo et al - Dancin vocals over some songs.

another thing which was mentioned before is effects. i always fool around with delays and sampling certain parts.

and the most unnoticed dj trick is track selection, if you got a killer set going no one cares about you lighting off fireworks while you cut in and out of 4 tracks.
Omega_Blue
ha true.

a cool little mix i did recently involved throwing the acapella of UNKLE - Reign (WoW remix) on top of Tiesto - Suburban Train (WoW remix). they're both in the same key and sound great together. I also did a mashup of Kamaya Painters - Far From Over (oliver lieb remix) over Holden & Thompson - Nothing (93 returning mix) that I thought sounded damn good. i'll post it up one of these days.
