which ones are the best (but budget too) that will prevent hissing etc. how does hooking up monitors work anyways, i'm newbie at this. do you need two cables, one for each speaker and hook each one into the soundcard outputs? damn i feel newbie asking that but, meh, whatcha gonna do :wtf:

i have XLR cables

i got them fre but it's like 10eur

i dont know witch monitors you got but take a picture for your monitors back panel and go to music shop and they will help you..

i know some guy are using guitar cables becouse those are cheap but xlr has much better sound

We'll really depends on what outputs you got on your soundcard for starters. But i guess to most popular input(s) on monitors is;

1. Unbalanced regular teleplug
2. Balanced XLR

An yes, you need to separate cables, one for left and one for right.

But i would really recommend you to hook your monitors through a mixerboards of some kind if you're going for active ones, since it's the best way to control the volume of them that way. I recently got my self a pair of Behringer b2031a, and I have a Scope Fusion Soundcard. Right now my monitors are hooked straight from the soundcard. The soundcard is always configured for maximum volume output so the hiss/noise is very noticable in the background. Don't really know if all the soundcards are configured that way, but sooner or later you'll probably end up with 1-2 hardware synths and then it's not optional anymore :)

you dont need mixer if you have volume knobs in your soundcard..

i have also b2031a's xlr to rca cables straight to my m-audio firewire audiophile card

jsut a quick question? so you need two cables, one for each speaker. do they have to go into ONE output through an adapter, or just seperate outputs?

edit: and whats the difference between balanced and unbalanced? thanks

i'm buying the Event TR-6 by the way. i just noticed the XLR input on the back. i thought xlr was only a microphone thing. guess i was wrong. so i need a cable converting an xlr to a 1/4" then?

I use Hosa TRS cables for my monitors. They're cheap, though...no matter how careful you are with them, eventually they'll start deteriorating inside and when you move the plug around, you'll hear sounds and stuff. Good cables are very expensive. I bought me an 8ch TRS snake...they're like $40....disposable cables, hehe.

my cables(for both) were around 75$ (XLR -> 1/4")... monster cables. i don't know why you would cheap shot your cables.

if you have a great sound card and great monitors, why would you cheap shot the connection between the two?

there are many advantages to higher quality cables besides longevity.

A cable is a cable.. Just make sure it's not too thin, or really old, and it will be fine.

I've read tons of debates on this, it's a pretty heated issue in the Hometheater/HIFI world.. but really, some people just like to waste money on cabels because psychologically they think price = quality.

picked up a copy of audiophile magazine and was flipping through and came across an ad for a 6 foot lenght of cable that was 599usd!

there are always marginal losses in cables due to resistance in the wires, $599 would suggest 6 feet of one of the purest types of conductor available commercially (gold perhaps)...shoot, most studios don't even use cables of that calibre, so really you'd be throwing a marble down a waterslide because you'd be trying to hear what isn't there.
