My dad is giving me an old laptop of his so that I can record my mixes to it directly from my mixer. What kind of cable would I need and how would I hook it up?
By the way, I know this probably belongs in the DJ Booth area, but since my Internet connection is utter e today I wanted to avoid getting "This Page Cannot Be Displayed." |

ummm rca-->1/8" i believe
assuming you don't have a nice soundcard or anything with RCA in on the laptop |

| might be the RCA cable to line in? that's what i have on my desktop...not really sure if its the same on a laptop. just make sure that before you start recording your input is set to "line in" instead of "mic". |

true, but most laptops these days, especially if its an old one, don't have line in
hence you have to use the mic in
works alright though |

mic in = mono
i'd recommend an external soundcard, if you don't have a line-in
the cable is indeed RCA --> Minijack
both male
that is all |

Wait, line in on my laptop or mixer? I'm so confused (they need like a recording mixes for dummies or something :P)
By the way, anyone have a link to the RCA/minijack cord? |

How can I tell if my laptop has line in or mic in? Where on the side of the laptop would I be able to tell? Sorry about the stupid n00b questions but this is a whole new thing for me :P |

midi cord in
get a midi card
overall cost like $250 for good sound quality |

| Um I don't have that kind of cash. I was hoping to just buy a cord or cable to connect my mixer to the laptop. Temporarily that's what I want to do but I may get a better sound card or something later. |

| Oh and if it helps at all, I'm going to use Audacity to record. By the way, on the program it has a pull down menu of different types of devices to record from, so would I choose line in since it's a mixer? The other choices were microphone, stereo mix, mono mix, cd player, aux, and phone line, and I am most certainly positive that cd player and phone line are not what I'm looking for :P |

Yes, these cables are avaliable at any mass merchandise store and cost 10 dollars or less (for a short cord).
It should look exactly (not something) like this.

The red and white (RCA) go from either your Recording outs or your Master outs (depending on your setup, but most likely youll want Master) to the laptop. The black jack (identical to most cheap headphone sizes) will plug into your laptops mic or line in port. Make sure, as others have said, that you enable the proper one in microsoft's sound settings double click the infamous yellow speaker icon in the clock section of the system tray).
I recommend Audacity as a free program for recording, or soundforge if youve got a bit of cash to drop.
As you get better or get more money, I highly recommend an external sound card as other have suggested. you can get some nice setups for only 200 dollars and you'll get better quality.
EDIT: I see you're using Audacity: excellent freeware choice. You will have to change the recording options under File > preferences (Ctrl+P) to properly record, but make sure you start Audacity AFTER youve setup Windows' audio settings and plugged the equipment in. The Input options are under the Audio I/O tab.
I hope this has been somewhat helpful and not toally redundant. |
Thank you so much for explaining this to me. What changes will I need to make in Audacity to properly record? |
