Right, heres what you do....
Start your sequencer up, load Battery.
Next, eject your CD drive.
Now stick your through the hole in the middle. (if you're female a nipple will do).
Now close the CD drive.
Repeat as necessary. |
flame war for nothing...

Sorry Drow - I was in a particularly sarcastic mood yesterday.
I haven't used Battery for a while (I use RMIV which I've found is better) so I can't remember if is displays the key used per pad.
Easiest thing to do is load up a few samples, then play the keys in your piano roll (or on your keyboard) until you find which note is for which pad. The 1st pad is usually something like C0 or C1, with each subsequent pad a key up (ie C# = pad2 D=pad3, etc) |

if you are using cubase, for example, you can turn the classic "piano roll" view into a "drum view" by choosing the GM Drum Mode on the channel's tab. it is easier to edit notes in this mode, since you only need to mark/unmark ticks, as in vintage drumboxes. i know of other sequequers that have similar options.
but the hard work has nothing to do with that. if your talking about "making drums", that's completely another stuff. |

honestly if your using flp i dont see a reason to use battery as the flp sequencer is pretty damn good for doing any percussion elements.. heres a remix im working on and at about 5:02 some breaks kick in and thoose breaks were done purely with the fruity loops sequencer and some samples from my collection. i need to work on the levals better but hey i still suck at producing so work with me here.

Alright let's talk about this, I'm sure there are some Chicane fans on here.
Let's break this sample down. You got your pads filling out the mid-highs very nicely. Then a nice atmospheric vocal goin on, and a piano. I don't think that's what you want to know about though. So moving on .....
Chicane uses great percussion, I would love to get my hands on his sample libraries. So my first step is for you to get ahold of appropriote samples. The kick is very deep, and contains very little mids and no highs. So get yourself a really deep bassy kick. The bassline is very subtle, only playing three notes. Sounds like a saw bass, or sin + saw combination. There is a very crisp shaker playing on the on beat and off beat of each bar.
That's all pretty basic. But what makes this unique to chicane is his snare patterns and effects. Notice at the end it sounds either like he throughs a flanger on the snare for one hit, or he reverses the snare.... also you hear the shaker/hats repeat extremely fast, like a machine gun effect. In fruity you can do that very simply with the 'chopper' (in the piano roll, select the note and press CNTL + U).
Then EQ everything, compress, limit, space everything out, check for any phasing.... and it might sound close.
The key here is that snare though. Get a nice light little 'snappy' type snare. and cut some of the mids on it and give it a boost around ... 5khz or so. The pattern is something like
K---S-----S--S---- then the second bar is
K---S---R-S--S---- R being the reversed snare.
I'll try make a sample to illustrate my points. What sequencer are you using? |
