I am having problems with getting a ride cymbal that doesn't sound too machiney or harsh. Here's the sample - Ride cymbal. Any tips or ideas?

Cheers

chillsonic
try samples from an acoustic drum set. natural; not machine-y.

Cheers for that matey. But what are the best EQ settings, FX and patterns for a ride. Is it best just every 2 steps, keep it simple. Or do you guys use any different types of patterns for this perc?
Frase
eq settings is the rest of the other percs with hi's in jus keep it up in the hi's
chillsonic
go as basic or as crazy as you want.

basic examples)

a)
R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-
--S---S---S---S-
K---K---K---K---

b)
RrRrRrRrRrRrRrRr
--S---S---S---S-
K---K---K---K---
*small r has less volume, or is otherwise different.

other examples)

a)
R-r-R-r-R-r-R-r-R-r-R-r-R--R--R-
----S-------S-------S-------S---
K-------K-------K-------K-------
*if it fits, it creats a cool off-beat

b)
R---R---R---R---R---R---R---R-12
----S-------S-------S-------S---
K-------K-------K-------K-------
*1 and 2 are rides. 1 is soft velocity, 2 is medium; creates a swinging link to the next pattern.

EQ high/mid high if you want them to be present and bright, otherwise lp filter or eq highs down. make sure they don't sound too harsh because they are so high. you can also just use gates with delay to create a fluttery ride pattern.

sorry this wasn't the best tutorial, but maybe you can use something.

for patterns, try putting the ride on every kick (every 4th step), and fill mid-steps with lower velocity rides (in cubase i would most probably use velocity 70-80), so that you will have cymbals on every 2nd step, but with level variations. about eq and fx - cut widely everything below, let's say, 1 KHz, then apply a not-so-wide cut at 4-6 KHz, and apply small boost at 10-12 KHz, and you could also give them some silky reverb with max diffusion, but try not to make it too long.

It can't be that hard to fit a cymbal in ur track can it?....with all the sample cds available.

Just use a 909 cymbal sample......its a classic and you can't go wrong, if you don't have a sample of it, let me know and i'll send you one.

Its not the sample thats the problem really. I just want the best EQ settings. Whatever I seem to do makes it sound too machiney. I need it sound a bit softer.

why try to correct it, get a sample that sounds good to start with, there are plenty out there.

Post the sample again and I'll see if I can help.
