IT all depends on which connotation of marriage you chose; religious or political. WHen it comes to civil rights and incentives that couples get, the same should be extended to homosexual couples, but MARRIAGE is the union of man and woman, and should remain so.

My thinking is that people who view marriage as a contract between the couple and God should not worry about same sex marriage as God is not part of that contract therefore it is not really a marriage. Why does it matter what it is called.

I'm looking at my upcomming wedding as being two services.... one that celebrates the contract with God (the sacrament of marriage part) and the other celebrating the contract with the state (the signing of the documents.... which in Catholic service is done at the end of the mass infront of the congragation).

I feel that homosexuals who wish to marry should also make a distinction between gay RIGHTS and gay wishes. They have a RIGHT to equality, they have a RIGHT to be together and express their love for one another without scrutiny, they have a right to the same liberties and advantages of a family that anyone else does. However, civil rights were never the sole issue. There have been many gay activist groups that have infringed upon the beliefs of varying religious institutions for their lack of support for homosexuality. Well f*** that. My point was only that there has to be a clear and vivid distinction between religious and civil ideas. The term "married" applies to (at least used to) the union of male and female, and is a term historically linked to that definition, one that with the exception of modern times, has always been a religious union, symbolic of the procreation of life. If people want to use this same term for the sake of simplicity, whatever. I don't want to come accross as being intollerant of the homosexual community, because I am not of that mindset. I do firmly believe that everyone should have the same civil freedoms and benefits, regardless of sexual preference, but I also firmly believe in the constitution of marriage, one which has NOTHING to do with civil freedoms. I guess I'm looking at this from a religious background, and so find it difficult to eliminate the connection of "marriage" with "man and woman".

However, "marraige" has existed pre-religion so....why make it the sole property of religious beliefs to exert control over that term? Since the glaciers retreated, people have been "married" (bound together) in all forms of culture, religion, etc. - it shouldn't be something that is solely designated as a religious ceremony. It's a human RITUAL, period. Romans, Greeks, Egpytians all had room for homosexuality in their cultures prior to ours - and they existed for MILLENIA! NO ONE has the right to control it in my mind.

If you're church dosen't want to marry gays, then don't. That's the choice of the church but that is the only choice it deserves.

wut is there to discuss?? fuk discutions. u leave it the way its supposed to be and stop picking at it. marriage is bettween a guy and a girl. period

canadians have so much time on their hands, i swear.
other countries are struggling to survive (ok maybe mostly 3rd world countries), but others deal with more important and NORMAL things (besides the States heh)

ie. wut dogs to ban? like wtf man

^^^ and thats why Canada is such a great country, we have the time to worry about things like this. We have got other things sorted out. Sure there are other problems, but i believe this is a very important one.

im guessing you are heterosexual, but how would you feel if somebody took away such a big right like marriage. Its a huge issue, which needs to be discussed. Remember love makes the world go round. Its a huge part of being human.

People need to be able to love others, and know that their love can be accepted.(some love is bad, like the stuff mentioned in the quotes, mom + son = :nervous: )

But that's just the thing - it's not the way its supposed to be, nycion. If I find that magical girl of my dreams, *I* cannot marry her and make her my wife - we're resolved to being "partners" for the rest of our lives by law.

And that IS something worth discussing.

^^^there u go. another "modern thinker"

let people marry whatever they want.

Indians 'Marry' Sacred Trees to Ward Off Evil Eye

Residents in the Indian city of Calcutta have "married" two colorfully decorated trees in an elaborate ceremony to ward off an evil spell.

The marriage between the sacred trees -- whose trunks were decorated with red cloth, streaks of vermilion and marigold garlands -- was followed by a banquet attended by nearly 1,000 people.

"There is an evil eye that has been cast on us. So we decided to take recourse to spiritual means to ward it off," Gouri Shankar Sengupta, one of the organizers of the wedding between a banyan tree and a peepul, a kind of fig tree, said on Monday.

A spate of burglaries had hit the area recently, as well as a murder and two suicides, which many residents felt came from an evil spell. The "marriage" took place Saturday but wedding celebrations will end late Monday. During the ceremony, a Hindu priest chanted hymns and lit a holy fire near the trees, which stand side by side.
