Well, they had to cut it at 5am because of the police, and they were going to just not have him play. He was going to go on after me before all of this got screwed up, so I let him tag with me starting at around 4:35. Unfortunately he was only able to get in two tracks before they forced us to cut the sound.
I would have thought they would pay him more then as a sort of apology. That's what I would do. They didn't. So I gave him most of the money they gave me. |
:eyes: OMFG Ill say this first: You are way in cool for doing that! I dont know anyone that would do that for a stranger. Much respect and I hope to meet you in person one day and shake your hand. Hes basiclly my brother-in-law and that was a real "class move"! Im totally in shock. Thats way cool that you shared your time (even if it was 2 tracks) with him as well as the paycheck.(that you didnt have to do) Its sad that he came such a long way to get dicked around but I hope he learns that he needs to cover his ass on any bookings. I was sketchy about that "joe/ev3r" guy. I never trusted the guy and he screwed "transcend" over in more ways than you think.
We had a long talk about the contract thing the night before, and I was hoping I was wrong :nervous: I know its a shady industry and was disappointed that he put so much trust into someone that burned him. I hope he learns from it.
Did he at least do a good job at those 2 tracks and did it fit with what you were laying down? I hope he had a good responce even though it was so short.
Thanks for informing me of the drama behind the scenes, I owe you a beer or something. Once again Ill thank you for being so generous to someone you just met. You have my respect:cool: Im soooo in shock still. |

Personally, I'm 100% against having 9-10 dj's in a room doing 1 hour sets, let alone 45 minute sets. If I were running things everyone would get at least 1 1/2 hour sets, so when things screw up you can still have a good number of people play for a while.
But given that rave promoters like to do things this way it's still wrong. I'm sorry, but if things screw up at the last minute you cut people who don't contribute and tell them they can play at the thank you party. If you have a venue that is not a rented-out club venue (i.e. LAEC), you're just begging to have a run-in with the police, especially in LA. So promoters shouldn't act surprised that such a thing happens: in fact they should count on it. And you never, EVER dick around invited guest djs. I know how upset I would be if the guy booking me to spin in Sacramento decided to just not have me play. I can't imagine what he was going through.
Things like this only infrequently happen to me because if it starts becoming a trend the fan base here (which for me is starting to get pretty large, I'm happy to say) gets upset and you do NOT want an upset crowd. However, if this is someone's first time playing in the area you absolutely have to watch out for it, and I wish he would have heeded your advice.
As far as what he played, at first I was worried that I wasn't playing the right style for him. I really wasn't in the mood to play too fast as things were screwing up around me (I think I topped out at 141 bpm which is a little bit slow for me). I saw that he put on an Overdose label track after I had Active Sight - Adrenalin on. The transition was reasonably good, not perfectly clean, but he didn't get close to wrecking at all (and he knows how to ride the pitch control better than I do!). The funny thing was is that I was going to played Miika Kuisma - Twisted next, and his track actually fit in perfectly. The other one? Gah, I forget. Maybe he didn't play one. I was busy talking to people and trying to think about how I was going to get my copy of Street Spirit back (it accidently fell through a crack in the stage, down onto the floor underneath it!
There was some other dj who was trying to work in with us and I think he caved to that (he shouldn't have). That dude nearly wrecked badly on his transition :D. So technically it was fine, but I think he was too down on the situation to really enjoy it. Maybe there will be better luck next time. |

| From what I have read, Under the Sea was a damn shady operation. When I saw Kenosis at Spundae he told me that they moved the venue to some bootleg place in LA. From that point I knew that it was over. What kind of company does business like that? If the promoter or who ever would have tried to dick around with me like that I would have ing kicked his teeth in. I have a tendency to not take from anyone. Kenosis, it was good to see you at Spundae. J00F was ing amazing!!! You got some good time in at JOOF. I was actually going to go see you spin after J00F but I forgot how to get there. From what I hear it's good that I didn't go. |

Ya...your right. Whatever went down, you made the right choice and had a good time. I know airing out the behind the scenes drama is bad but for what its worth Kenosis really showed what a good person he is....I really cant say enough good things, that he gave up so much for someone he didnt know. I hope these so called "promotors"...get their together and do good by the "talent" they hire in the future...for their own good. |

I do want to thank Kristina for showing up. That was really awesome of her.
As far as the shadiness goes, there was some of that, but the other aspect of this that you guys aren't identifying is that many of these people have no idea how to throw an event. If you have people who either don't have experience or just simply cannot handle complexity then you end up with logistical nightmares like the one last night.
As far as knowing what the hell they're doing, 26c is probably the best in the rave scene. 26c Rob could probably run a large club. |

A note to your friend.
These guys you can trust to know what they're doing:
1. Sensory Overload (the most honest, non shady crew in the LA scene hands down)
2. Addicted Events/Tyco Productions (usually)
3. 26c/Freedom Force Five (usually)
Otherwise, prepare for headaches. |

Yeah, I got my copy back, but it had to go through several iterations of GruvGlide and one side of it is a little scratched...it's the side I don't play, though :D |

For what its worth, Im glad you were able to make the best of a hectic night. I hope the best for you Kenosis, for the future. You did a really nice gesture that would be unheard of in most situations.
I still havent talked to him, since he got home...so I dont think he know what details I do know. Ill see if hes honest with me about the behind the scenes BS. I wish you the best of luck:cool: |
