Bad filters in VST synths
View this Thread in Original format

Everytime people make the comparison between hardware synths and software synths, especially the difference in filters is mentioned... Software VST's in tracks are easily recognisable because of their filters, according to people who know.

-Why is this?
-How could a filter cutoff sound different/better in hardware synths, as the principle is the same?
-Which are the VST synths with the best filters?
-If a filter in a vst synth is not good, why not use a external filter effect vst which is good like fruity filter (dont know if this is good)?

I havent experienced any problems with vst filters myself, just asking the pro's to sorten this out for me...

I think some VST can't really exactly reproduce the filter because on a hardware synth, it's doesn't only depend of how the thing is coded... but how it has been used to. The sound is created by a lot of little hardware bugs sometime...

But for me, I prefer the VST sound... Some tracks has a ugly hardware sound which would be better if made by VSTs.

It's perhaps a jealous reaction of people frustrated by using hardware and seeing what you can do with less material.

some soft synths has bad internal effects

try to use som pro class vst- effects

The actual act of running a signal through a hardware circuit has an effect on the signal. I dont know if its minute bugs like DJule says or the fact that the physical circuit has an effect on the sound, but hardware filters seem to sound larger and more active. Plus it also comes down to the technology behind the filters themselves. VST technology is still in its infancy compared to hardware manufacturers. And this is complete speculation on my behalf, but I imagine some of the software filters are coded much more conservatively so that they dont impact on the CPU too much.

You can still get filters on hardware though, the MC303 and CS1X filters were complete duds. And theres good filters on VSTs too. The filters on synth 1 are pretty good and sound very aggressive. I hate the filters on Albino though. You can hardly tell if they are processing the sound or not sometimes.

So does someone know of good VST/DX filters with cutoff to replace ty filters?

nitro is good

On some synths I like the Korg MS20FX (which is only the filter, not the whole synth).

using external filters can be an option, however (without knowing the technical term) you don't get the kinda trickling liquid effect as the filter changes the individual note cuttoff, instead you just change the filter of the complete sound as if the notes had really long decay.

both have their own upsides tho, and both filtering methods are used in trance today

hmm use External Filter or VST effect's

i think this is good LOFI and its Free.

tnx guys

i can see external filter plugins act differently as built-in filters, for example when i high pass till 150 hz and play with the resonance knob the effect is very different compared with external filters (i guess you guys know what i mean)

I use Arturia Moog Modular along with like 100's of my other vst's and i love the damn filters on that thing. that board is so customizable.

RIPassion
The moog modular looks nice. It doesn't look easy to pick up, though. How hard is it to program?
