DJ FINED ₤1M FOR “ILLEGAL SET”
A DJ has been fined almost ₤1m for playing pirated CDs and illegally downloaded MP3s in his DJ set. The Italian, who was playing in Rieti, near Rome, was found in possession of more than 2,000 illegal MP3s when the Fiscal Police raided the club. Authorities made an example of the DJ with the €1.4 million fine, hoping to deter others from piracy. The fine is the biggest of its kind, according to the International Federation Of The Phonographic Industry (IFPI).
Thankfully, it is unlikely that these measures will be enforced in the UK. A spokesperson for the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) says, “We do not plan to bang down the doors of clubs or target DJs. Our priority is to tackle major file-sharing Internet services, such as Grokster and Kazaa. But that’s not to say we would turn a blind eye if we discovered a DJ using uploaded files,” he adds with a sneer. |
