Hehe.. you have a couple small reviews here.
Cliff notes: I'm not very picky, and I thought Hernan, Junkie XL and Armin represented the tranceaddicts quite well. :p I thoroughly enjoyed all of their sets -- Chemical Brothers too (their set was surprisingly more trancey than the last time I saw them in 2002 (or maybe it's just my bad memory :p), and full of energy as always).
Some people think the sets could have been better, or had better track selections given the short set times. I could agree, but I had a blast anyway!
Armin was definitely the highlight of my weekend, and he seemed to really enjoy himself up there in the DJ booth -- the crowd was feeling him for sure. To be frank, I thought his set was fantastic. Now if I could only find a tracklist :whip: :whip: :whip: I recognized most of the tracks, but there are a couple I really wish I knew the names of!
I had a great time and really enjoyed the variety in music present at the festival. :) |

Here's a quick review of Day 1 from me, in chrono order:
Evil 9--straight DJ set.
M-83 ---kinda like a French Pink Floyd. not bad, not impressed.
Snow Patrol--smooth, subtle. me liked.
Keane--like Snow Patrol, but keener.
UNKLE--started off real rough. But played some good songs in there.
He's a better producer than a DJ, I conclude--I love all of
Never-Never Land, but he wasn't working the crowd out right.
Weezer (yay!) nice set.
Bauhaus--ohmygosh, they lowered the lead singer UPSIDE down from the stage
lights. He sang the first song, Bela Legosi is Dead, hanging upside
down.
I scooted over for the End of Hernan Cattaneo's set. Good set, he closed with Infusion "Girls can be Cruel".
Then back for the end of ColdPlay. I was pleasantly surprised by how good ColdPlay is live.
All in all, a good day--not as hot as years past. |

There were four of us that went; I am the hardcore electronic junkie; my friend Joey is half & half, and the other two didn't really care.
I'm awful at trainspotting; sorry :(
I think I got everything in the right order:
Sat:
The Raveonettes
The Kills
UNKLE
Josh Wink
MF Doom
Cafe Tacuba
Hernan Cattaneo
The Chemical Brothers
Sun:
Matthew Dear
JEM
Kasabian
Ben Watt
Miss Kitten
Tegan & Sara
The Arcade Fire
New Order
AvB
Roni Size & Dynamite MC
The Faint
Bright Eyes
IMHO:
UNKLE kicked my ass. I was looking forward to his set, and he had me moving the entire time. I really enjoyed his track selection, and I
would love to get a tracklisting.
Personally, I'm not into Josh Wink. I did think he was excellent (for the time I stayed to see him).
I only saw MF Doom for 10 min and it was cool, but I didn't spend too much time.
Hernan was great; exactly what I was expecting (and my pick of the day). I just spaced out for 1.5h and danced the night away... but that's what I wanted to do :)
Being upfront for Hernan allowed me to be upfront for the Chemical Brothers, who were simply spot on. Having them in the tent made it amazing.
Matthew Dear was fine; I'm not into his sound, and I'm not sure how well it works for Coachella.
I love house, so he was my pick of the day. Set skills were bad, unfortunately (1 wreck, 1 mixer problem, 2 skips, but one wasn't his fault :), but the music was great, so it was all good. I'm not sure how many other people were into house (as the rest of my group left in the middle of the set bored by it), but I'll take him any day of the week.
Miss Kitten wasn't good. Give me DJ Colette any day of the week instead.
New Order was fine. Their set was a little short. They played Blue Monday which was :)
AvB played a lot harder (but others said he wasn't as hard...) than he played in his last 2 LA sets, which I prefer, especially for that time of night & venue. A bit of cheese (but what trance isn't?), but his mixing was spot-on.
So, I'm leaving the tent when Roni Size comes on (actually Dynamite MC comes on first). I dislike dnb. I dislike MCs. Combine the two, and I really dislike them.
So, what happened? They were great! I couldn't believe how well they worked together, and how awesome the dnb sounded on the speakers. After dancing for an hour straight under Armin, I just stayed and completely went crazy for the next hour and half.
I would totally go see them again.
I then escaped the tent just as the masses of people were coming from NIN to see The Prodigy. |

My Day 2:
Got to the show around 2 pm. I walked by the Perceptionists, but they
were too jarring for that early in the day.
Wandered over to SixToo,
which I liked--a guy spinning trip-hoppy records, sounded a bit like
PortisHead or Tricky. Good music to lie on the grass in the shade,
recuperating from yesterday & plotting my plan of attack for the day.
Through a combination of 20 minute segments, I planned to hit as many
acta as possible.
Saw Matthew Dear. I'd never heard of him, but he was surprisingly
good--had people up & dancing at 3 in the afternoon. I'd see him
again.
MIA, an Indian woman rapper from London, had gotten hyped at SXSW. We
went by her stage, but I wasn't impressed. Over to
Kasbian--okay, nothing special.
Then the real fun segment started, I wanted to see about 8 acts in 3
hours, over a festival covering about a 1/2 mile in area. I had to be
choosy--if after ~5 minutes I wasn't loving an act, I'd move on.
Gang of Four--eh, didn't do anything for me, so stopped by
Z-Trip. I really like Music For Uneasy Listening, but what he was playing right then wasn't doing much for me, so I motored on to...
Junkie XL--he rocked! I actually don't like "A Little Less
Conversation". But, he was excellent, building the crowd up. I'd
like to see him again. Lots of people on E...one large guy rushed past
me in an urgent fashion to go hump a speaker. He was too big to be
moving around that quickly, luckily I dodged. Then I had to jet over
to
NEW ING ORDER. OHMYGOD. I can honestly say that this hour made
the whole trip worthwhile.
They opened with "Don't walk away...in silence". Followed with
"Regret".
Peter Hook, the bassist, is a GOD. I was so happy to see him live. Some parts I had
thought were the keyboards were actually him on bass, carrying the
melody.
They played about 4
songs off "Waiting for Sirens", their new album. It's a good album, but the songs on it aren't old
friends like "Temptation" or "Shell Shock". They did play "Blue
Monday" & "Bizarre Love Triangle", along with JD's "Love will tear us
apart". & :Transmission" Bernard Summers said he couldn't dance, & proved it by doing
his white guy limp about the stage. Somewhat odd to realize one of
the best selling dance singles of all time (Blue Monday) is by some
British wankers.
Then, I rushed over to ARMIN VAN
BUUREN, for the last 30 minutes of his set. INCREDIBLE how good good
music makes me feel. He played Adagio (unknown remix). He closed out with an electronic remix of
"Smells Like Teen Spirit". I had mixed feelings--Freeland's been
playing that song for over a year. OTOH, the next act was Drum n'
bass (roni Size), & it was a decent transition from trance to harder
music. Plus I got to Mosh.
At this point, I had a good position right at the front of the stage,
so I thought I'd stay for the first part of Roni Size. Usually I
can't stand MC's--they drive me to distraction. It never occurs to
me--"gee, this music is really good....what it needs is a guy speaking
above it, telling me to "make some mother ing noise." "
But this MC was tolerable, & Roni was a master on the laptop, flipping
in good tracks. I stayed for the whole set. He played "Paper Bags".
Then I caught the last 20 minutes of "The Faint". They were good, but I was getting worn out. We went back to the dance tent (it's a 7 minute
walk from the main stage back to the dance tent...every time the walk
seemed to get longer & longer) to see
THE PRODIGY. COMPLETELY PACKED. The front men are
two guys, one black (Maxim) with dreads, the other dead white (Kool
Keith) with a mohawk. Both seemed to try to look as pissed off &
menacing as possible, posing & scowling at the crowd. Maxim was
wearing a Bondage Kilt...a long black skirt with about 500 big shiny
safety pins down the front. I was very impressed with the live show.
At one point Kool Keith spit at the crowd. "Firestarter", "Poison" &
"Voodoo People" & "Breathe". I'd have liked to hear Charly--they
might have played it before I got there. For "Smack My Bitch Up",
Maxim stood up on a speaker, then jumped down into the crowd & pranced
around.
I'm glad I went this year--New Order was my favorite. Not quite as good as last year. This year didn't sell out like last year, but it seemed better run--the parking lines to get out were much more reasonable. & I never had to wait long for a bathroom. |

How were the Dresden Dolls? My friend's friend's (yeah w00t) brother is the male (Brian) in the Dresden Dolls and I really wanted to meet him but I wasn't able to go to Coachella due to the date + financial issues.

I only walked by the tent they were playing in after going on a bathroom break, but I saw them open for Nine Inch Nails last Wednesday at the Warfield in San Francisco and I thoroughly enjoyed their music. For just two people, they have an amazing sound. My friend who I went with had heard their CD, but said seeing them perform live was far better given the simplicity of the band (again, just two people -- easier to appreciate). We were both pretty impressed. |
