I went on sunday and it was off the hook. There were so many people (hot girls) supposedly about 35,000. I ended up checking out pretty much all of the artists. First off the special guests came out complementary of DJ Z-Trip. He first brought out Bus Driver to rap over his tracks(I swear he is the fastest rapper I have ever heard). Then next he brought out Adam Freeland to tag team a track( some R.A.T.M.) I was like holy . Then Z-Trip told us that last time he spun he brought out BECK and then announced Chester from Linkin Park who came out and sung a song with him( the crowd blew up)I guess they play it on the radio a lot.
Back to my review. I was soooo disaponted with Armin Van Buuren's set. I dont know if you TA's just hyped him up to much or what but I wasnt feeling him. All day the other djs where tearing it up and had everyone dancing( the energy was through the rough)I was telling my friend how much I could not wait for Armin and how he is #3 dj in the world and how we were going to be dancing are asses off to him. Armin came on and nothing. I was waiting for him to drop some major tracks but he was playing the most mellow trance ever. My friend was looking at me like I was crazy, I told him he would pick it up but nothing. Finally I ended up leaving to see new order because I could not even dance to his . Enough of Armin lets talk about all the other acts that I loved.
Junkie XL was by far the best dj I saw. He played a lot of reconizable tracks but he uses effect over a lot of his stuff. He was singing along to all of his tracks and dancing. I think he is the best dj I have ever seen close out his last track. He was going off on his effects standing on top of the dj decks and then slammed down the effects leaving it blaring. I had never heard of Miss Kittin, Matthew Dear, and Diplo before. Let me tell you Diplo who is 2 guys are tight. I think they are from South America because they had a latin style going on. They remixed evrything( the one I remeber most was Bombs over baghdad) If anyone has heard of them let me know because they were very good. Matthew Dear was good but kind of kick back house. Miss Kittin had the beats hitting. What I thought was cool about her set was she sang over a lot of her tracks. When Roni Size came on he had the crowd in his palm. Dynamite MC had the crowd pumped up and Roni kept it rolling. I think most of the people where caught off gaurd because of how slow Armins set was and then they had Roni and Dynamite MC come on who are full of energy and had the crowd going off. After Roni The Prodigy came on. The lead singers are freaking crazy. The played them all ( smack my bitch up, fire starter, mindfields, etc.) I was trippen on the samplist from The Prodigy, he had so many keyboards and laptops and effects it was crazy. They have a drummer, gutairist, and bassist, but most of there music comes from the samplist. I saw all the bands too that were very good but you probably do not want to hear my reveiw of them.
p.s. Dont get me wrong Armin played a good set (perfect mixing) but all the dj's before him were bringing so much energy and I heard so many good things about him that I was just expecting a lot more.
Oh and it only took 10 min to get out of the parking lot. And ther were not a lot of kids and people on drugs. All of you other TA's giving me excuses that are not even lagitable. |

I dunno what kind of music you were expecting Armin to spin but he was pretty much right on par with what I have seen him play live in the past (although much fewer vocal tracks). Do you listen to his ASOT radio broadcast sets? The major issue, I guess, was the shortness of the set, since he usually does some harder stuff all in a row but primarily plays more "mellow" trance songs (for lack of a better term). 1 hour and 15 minutes isn't long enough to go from melodic -> hard -> melodic. I and many other people love his style, but I will agree that he only spun two "harder" tracks. I hope you at least stayed around to hear those. At least his set was a contrast to the rest of the DJs there -- Coachella is all about musical variety.
It's funny -- my friends and I (who all love Armin's style) get absolutely flabbergasted when we're at one of his shows and we see people standing around and not dancing. I usually assume it's just people who don't like dancing or don't want to look "silly," but I never attribute it to people not feeling the music because I simply can't listen to the music and NOT want to move! For what it's worth, I was in the front near the DJ booth and everyone was moving and having a great time!
Everyone has their own music tastes and that's perfectly fine. I'm bummed you didn't enjoy yourself more during Armin's set, but I'm glad you enjoyed Junkie XL (as I did very much, too). Did you see Chemical Brothers close the Sahara on Saturday? They had a lot of energy and I was quite impressed with them yet again. My top 3 acts of the weekend were Armin, Junkie, Chemical Brothers, with Hernan a close 4th. :) |

I agree, Chemical Brothers were really impressive...except for that laughing clown on the screen, that was SCARY AS HELL. I think I had nightmares...
I liked how they played their two radio songs immediately, which got rid of all the people don't know any better. Good tactic by them, because it was ridiculously crowded when we first got there.
And for people who didn't want to pay this year, if you scan the perimeter of the fencing, you will find ways to sneak in for free! It's a damn big field and they can't guard all of it. Done it for the past two years now! |
