trance music with lyrics

I'm writing a paper about lyrics in trance music for my Music & Language class.
Most of the paper will analyze the lyrics themselves, & how they play part in their particular songs, but some of the paper will deal with how people in the trance scene react to/feel about lyrics & vocals, etc...
If some of you could respond to any or all of the following questions to help me out, that'd be awesome. :D

1. What are your favorite trance songs with lyrics? What makes them special?

2. Are the words important for your enjoyment of those particular songs?

2b. What about the voice of the singer?

3. Do you prefer EDM tunes with vocals? Trance tunes with vocals? Why/why not?

4. How do you feel about spoken phrases in EDM in general? In trance specifically? (ex. "Digital punk" in Ferry Corsten's "Punk")

5. Most trance lyrics are looked at as cheesy & not very good. What are some lyrics/songs with lyrics that you feel ARE good and/or not cheesy? Why? (I'm looking for both song titles & lyric excerpts in the answers to this question) (also, specify if what you're posting for this question is "good", "not cheesy", or both... they are not necessarily one and the same after all. ;) )

Those are the most important questions for now... thanks so much, guys!

Rachel :)

I am not to familiar with track names but I know for me transitioning from main stream and "Hippie" music (as it is termed Grateful Dead, Phish) I gravitated to EDM with vocals, I have only been fully immersed in the scene for the last year, where I have gained knowledge and a better understanding of EDM that I find I am liking more non-vocal tracks. For myself I was used to going to concerts where I would sing along with every word to every song. For me I found a connection in the vocals. I feel at times the vocals in a track or song can express the words you can't or the feelings you can't or in a better way and can be therapeutic at times.

To summarize: There is nothing better then hearing your favorite vocal track, turnin up the volume and singing along.

Hope it helps Rachel!!

Rachel :)

1. most of them are on my website :D
chicane - saltwater
chicane - autumn tactics
solid sessions - janeiro (avb remix + Pronti Kalmani remix)
perasma - swing to harmony (original... g&D butchers the vocals)
cass+slide - perception
lexicon4 - reach me (taken from the 80's oleta adams song)
art of trance - love washes over
apoptygma bezerk - kathy's song (vnv remix... both guy and girl vocals)
banco de gaia - obsidian (green ham and eggs...)
solar stone - speak in sympathy

2. yes
if the vocals are positive, it adds to the song. when i used to listen to hiphop i hated it when a good melody/beat was ruined by trashy lyrics (sex + drugs)

2b. oh yes
having someone like sarah mclachlan or jan johnston (i wanna marry her) sing the song adds so much dimension to the song, in terms of depth, emotion and sexyness.

3. it really depends.
sometimes vocals add to the song, sometime they're not needed. alot of pvd's songs on otab work w/o vocals b/c they're uplifting/powerful in their own right. when lyrics are tagged onto a song to give it a commercial mainstream version of the song, usually it's ruined.

4. again hit or miss.. has to be done right
eg. 'without you' lyrics lifted from Dirty Vegas, looped onto G&D's Portobello on their WMC EM... wow!

5. see answers to question1

hope this helps rach! see u at hooters~!

hey, i want to marry jan johnston too! maybe we can come up with a way to share her. ;) we'll have to move to the same part of north america first, though.

mmm... i love this song. i love apoptygma berzerk in general.... esp some of their newest, more trance-influenced, music. :) nothing beats "Eclipse" though ("and today we'll catch a glimpse of eternity / as the world stands still, for a moment / and i guess we will be making history / when we all join hands just to watch the sky / for a moment")

thanks for the comments so far! everything helps. anyone else want to respond? c'mon.... more more more!

(if you think my questions suck, you can just ignore them and address what you want to about trance/edm lyrics)

I can just think of two of my favorite songs where the lyrics are amazing... they're not even trance but they're some sort of EDM I suppose :)
BT - Mercury & Solace and Telefon Tel Aviv - Sound in a Dark Room
And yes, I'll admit it, like most people, As The Rush Comes had a great effect on me the first time I heard it in a club, the lyrics were very cool...

Some songs, I just wanna kill the singer... Cass and Slide - Perception Dub mix is 100x better than the vocal version. That crazy crazy breakdown sings for itself and doesn't need any vocals to supplement it :p Another example, Force of Gravity, ugh, so cheesy after 20 times of hearing it... it was nice at first though. But a good vocals track shouldn't get old.. my two favorite songs with lyrics never get old, and I know every word forwards and backwards...

And yes, the words are important because one carefully placed word or phrase (or, on the other hand, one badly placed lyric) can make or break a song IMO... the majority of EDM songs with lyrics in them kinda suck I think... but those that don't overdo it on lyrics, and let the music also speak, are the best. I mean, I don't even really know what the woman is singing in Sound in a Dark Room, I can't make it out, but it makes me cry :p Something about loving you in the morning.... :)

one of the few vocal tracks that work.

-------------------------------------

BT - Mercury & Solace (w. jan johnston on the vocals)

Awareness, the fruit of life.
Awareness and happiness.

Vibes...

The dance never ends.

But I know you're there.
But I know you're there.

Only you are my happiness.

Memories...

Happiness...

Lovely voices...

In nightfall I'll meet you,
seeds of desire absolve.
There's no going back.
I'm losing control.

As the morning creeps up,
and I'm looking for the shade.
In your embrace,
My grieving says.

Reach out for me - reach out.
Reach out for me - reach out.

I know you're there...you're there.

Reach out for me - reach out.
Reach out for me - reach out.

I may go with you.

Reach out for me - reach out.
Reach out for me - reach out.

I savour every moment.
I'll savour every moment.
You're precious,
You're precious to me.
