blogs (or "weblogging") became popular due to the potential to reach people across the globe faster than any other medium (print, television, radio) and more frequently (updates daily for example).
the most popular are political blogs. Several politicians used blogging on their websites as a way to talk to the people and get their message to the masses. Whether good or bad, it encouraged discussion and allowed anonymity for people to respond (if they so desired).
There were also the countless tsunami blogs after/during the event hit.
