How much do I put in a track?

I've heard alot about "less is more", but how much is that? I guess it all depends. I'm working on a track right now, and all I got is one main melody, a kick, a hihat, and one bassline. I've been trying to get the right sound for a lead, some drumwork (percs etc), but I don't seem to make it fit. So I really need some help here. I need to know how many leads, how many melodies, basslines etc you really need. I'm kinda stuck, and I really wanna make this track good, serious, and hopefully promotable ;D

I know the typical answers for this kind of question "depends on tune", "you know when it's enough", and "go to sleep", and the latter sounds really tempting. But I just need a generalization.

Post a sample of your track and describe what you were goin for when you made it.

Typically in trance you will hear two basslines in a track. A sub bass, and a mid bass. Sub bass is mainly in the lowest bass freq's, and the mid contains mostly mid range freqs. Try getting a really bassy synth goin, then put a note on the off beat after each kick. then EQ out the highs and mids of the bass. Then create a mid bass, eq out the lows and highs, then make a more unique bassline with it. anything really will do (this is where the creative part comes in). So now your kick will sit well with the lows, and you will have a killer sounding bassline. Some producers around here will even make a high bass.

For leads you'll prolly have one doing the main melody, then one doing a countermelody maybe. One or two pads. might have a seperate synth playing some sort of hook. Maybe some synths doing effects.

Whatever you really wanna do.

im assuming your an amature being of this question. for one thing, i dont think you should have making a promotable track in the first go, your main asperation. it will never happen. just have fun, and just keep working on it. be prepared to explore and experiment, because thats the only way your going to beging to amount to something as a producer. nobody starts off by making some promotable in the first, second, or even 100th go. ive been doing this for 2+ years and i am now just finding my "sound". just follow your heart, dont just sit at in your studio fantisizing about having your track playing at a large venue by someone respectable. chances are it wont happen. but thats not saying it wont at all. the only why you are going to get there at all is by following your heart, soul and mind. but its going to take a while to learn how to even use the pen before you can start writing with it. first comes a short story and eventually poetic novels. i hope that analogy made sense. good luck! :)

I have to disagree. Not flaming you here, but i think some of this this is pure discouraging(even if there are parts that really sound encouraging :)). I think everyone who likes to do music should have as their aperation to sell their music and get it played. I mean, isn't that a main driveingforce when you are creating music? If i hadn't had that as a goal when i started out i would never have been where i am at today. I am a working music producer and have been for the last 6 years. Before that i used to have this as a hobby for many years and i used to fantazise about getting my music played.

I say, go on doing what you are doing and keep fantazising about the day you get famous! :-D

I 'spose its different for everyone. For me, truthfully...I get this indescribible feeling...like I want to just breakfree...rip my self out into somekind of skinless, bodyless, mindful, place. Its impossible to explain, but it seems this feeling can get very intense and i cure it through music. now if someone comes along and enjoys my music, i will be nothing but pleased. im not doing this for "fame" or anything...and i know thats not what you mean, but half of my driving force to do this...is just to keep sane. essentially its one of the few things have and the only thing that allows me to express myself. i find that language and physical communication is just too limited for me, so i express what i so strongly feel through music, what ever the forumla may be to get there. of course once in a while i wank off and do something just for fun, but my main thing is just because it is so plain and simply, my passion. as long as i do this...therapy, ill call it, im going to be just fine. none of my stuff ever has to go public, and currently it hasnt, give or take on or two "experiments". to each his own. i completely understand and respect where you are comming from though. just for the record i dont create trance...:thepirate

by being musicians (if i may be so bold to pop a label on us here), we are all (hopefully) doing this to fill in some kind of space, or give us whats lacking, or show what we have; what ever reason we have, we are all on some kind of similar quest, just different ways of getting there. :happy2:

sorry for all this hippy , but its my perspective on music, at least for me. :tongue2

in my tracks I usually have 2 basses, 1 very deep and 1 that plays mostly in the midrange freqs. I also have something like 20 different sounding percs, a kick, an open hat, clap, something like 10 effects (crashes, whooshes and stuff), a lead (usually a nord lead), pads, strings, a piano/guitar, and a couple of "small" instruments (for these I mostly use 3xOSC/TS404).

I think that's pretty much "less is more" :)
