Desktop/rack vs keyboard synths

Just need to find out if theres any difference if I buy rack versions of hardware synths (eg virus C desktop, JP8080), and use an evolution 449 midi controler to control all of them, instead of buying the full keyboard versions of all those synths.

What would the implications be?

It would be more cost effective, for one... other than that, please provide your valued inputs=)

the jp8080 has better specs than its keyboard counterpart...as long as you have 1 keyboard controller than it should be pretty much all rack gear from there on out as much as possible...i'd only pick up another keyboard if the synth i want doesn't have a rack version.

If u already have a midi controller get the Desktops version.

If i don't have a controller yet? which would be a wiser option?

I'm weighing between getting:

a) a controller (eg evolution 449c) and desktop-version synths (eg virus C desktop)

or

b)keyboard synth (eg JP8000) and desktop-version synths (eg virus C desktop), meaning i'll use the JP8000 keyboard as my midi controller.

I play my music live, and wiggling in front of a couple of keyboards definitely looks better than bending over a rack. :D

Buy a controller. Don't use the JP8000 as the controller, it's really better to have a keyboard especially for that. If you don't plan to do some lives I think it's better to have racks to keep some spaces in your studio for other stuff.

thanks for the advice.

How important is 'velocity' in controllers? and the 'after-touch' ?

evolutions have velocity. and the new improved editol PCRM range have 4 different velocity curves, but how important are these?

the radiums don't have velocity and i wish they did coz that would ease my decision making process and save me some $ too.

i was all but set on getting the evo 449c but i heard the keys etc feel cheap. and then theres the PCR50 which i was so sure about too but then edirol JUST HAD to come out with the PCRM versions with velocity. If the PCR50s had the velocity thingy i'd grab them over the evo449c.

I have an Evolution Keyboard and it's great! Velocity is not so important for trance or techno music. But my advice is to buy a Evolution Keyboard because they're really well done for using them with Reason or Cubase.

The after-touch and the "cheap" keys are not a big deal for trance producers. If you were a real profesionnal keyboard player it won't be very interesting for you but I think you're not...

Can anyone vouch for what DJule just said regarding the cheap feeling not being really important?

hehe yeah i ain't no pro..

but hey regarding the number of octaves, was wondering if i could assign/set a specific (say..2nd, or 4th) octave to something higher (not in sequence with the rest)?

So for e.g. on the evo 449 (which has 4 octaves) ... it will be something like 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th(skipping 2 octaves)

i have a midiman oxygen 8 and its great but im planning on buying a key synth for gigging purposes like the other guy said racks are good in the studio but when it comes to tweaking live etc or even in studio its good to have it all right in front of you the desktops can sometimes make tweaking tricky depending on where u got the unit placed.

reverb racks and fx proccessors are fine but for synths im more of a key unit person.

if ur just gonna play the lead go with the desktop/rack but if u wanna incorperate tweaking by hand get the keys with the unit.
