You are releasing your first mix album "The Politics Of Dancing". Why did it take so long? Why now?
Because actually I don't like mix albums. The Djing has a lot to do with communication and interaction through music with people. Something like that can't be done on a CD. That's why such a long time till there was one. It isnt a real Mix-CD, actually it's more a mixture between Artist Album, Remix Album and DJ-Mix-CD. I thought about how to create a concept how to put all those parts together: On the one hand I chose the tracks as DJ, but I will also remix and change the tracks as producer and to complete it all to have a cool sound. And so it happened: Every track on the album is remixed, overworked, put apart and put together.
How did you work on your track selection?
I thought about which tracks I'd like to hear at this moment, so I wrote down 50 tracks. Those are the tunes I really like to hear and play at the moment and to which the crowd's reaction is just brilliant. 50 tracks because I have been told that usually twice more tracks need to be requested for licensing than you normally want. As I already said, I don't have any experiences with DJ-Mixes-CDs. We got the licenses for every track except for one [Note: It's Underworld - Born Slippy]. 78 minutes are on one CD, there are 2 CDs and I wanted to put as much tracks on one side as possible. Evey two minutes one track and all the time bang bang bang isn't that good too. To keep the flow, some tracks didn't get on the CD, but with 34 tracks we are still good in.
Do you manifest with the title "Politics of Dancing" your opinion about the Politic of the Dance Music Scene?
Yes, up to a point. The background shows that when we think the passed 10 years, we were quite proud to be different. When we got asked what was so special about the techno scene, we answered tolerance and the way how we got to live with each other. Which is true of course. And next to this, a huge youth culture grew up. The problem is, that we have stopped to tell this the people that it is like that..
and you just continued partying?
Exactly. Even if it always changed and got bigger. Nowadays it is a world wide culture. We have forgotten to show the authorized persons that in the second, they decide to close a club, they don't just take away 2000 kids' chance to party on the weekend, no they also decide to take their chance to join a world wide youth culture. Not depending on some drug consume problems in a club. That's a social problem, what has to be decided on a higher level. We can't just destroy this culture! In this year it was hard: The Twilo in New York has been closed, the Coco Rico in Italy, Gatecrasher in Sheffield has a problem, the Casino in Berlin, the Home in London ect.
This year the Loveparade's Status as politic demonstration had been canceled. On the day from the Terror attacks in the USA on www.loveparade.net there was something like "Terror kills Tolerance". Do you agree that such a clear language is being used to show the politic?
I always wanted that, because it was always clear to me that the Loveparade had been a political demonstration in its own way. Which is good. People don't just walk around with banners asking for more jobs - of course it's clear what we want. It's just the way we are together with each other and celebrate - a political demonstration. That is what we all need. If officially it is being said that it's just one great party, I feel sorry! I prefer to show my opinion in form of a party instead of running around in the street and breaking glasses to show my thought of community. But which is being allowed as political demonstration! If the parties just wouldn't be rated as Outgoing- and Drugculture, the youth wouldn't be that uninterested in politics as today. But there's one thing you don't have to forget, if you are 25 years old today, there wasn't any time without music, djs, clubs and electronic music. Which results to a very important thing! If all the clubs are being closed, it will be very frustrating.
By the way, isn't it a politic problem if the Raveline just cries if people like you and WestBam remix Rammstein?
This is truly a very german phenomenon. I have done lately a Raveline Interview, in which I have noticed that this man didn't really take his time to think about it. If someone has been to a Rammstein concert, he can tell that there aren't any skins. There are Punks, Rockers and normal people like me. And of course friends of electronic music, because this is a very important part of their music. And also in that interview I have mentioned that I am engaging myself for the iniative "No historical Backspin", doing a lot of things, I don't let the public know. If I work together with the guys from Rammstein and do a remix it is everything else than a statement that they are Nazi. It is very poor to tell your opinion straigh away without even having heard an album or a video of them.
Please describe us the travel you take us with your CD.
I don't like to. I don't want to preset any images. The beautiful of our music is, that you have to bring your self in order to bring your full experience. That's why I don't want to describe how the travel should look like. I can only say that it had been one of the hardest things I have ever done before. To create an Artist Album is way easier. Just listen to it and if I like it, I am happy. I am not mad at anybody who doesn't feel like that. It's just that what I have to offer. If someone would like to have that, I am happy, and if not, it is also good.
I hope you enjoyed it and sorry for my bad english!

Hey All!
No problem, I know that there are a lot of PvD fans in here so I thought it might be interesting. Yes, the translation was hard since Paul uses a high German. |
