Review: James Holden @ Spirit [5/13/2005]

My goodness what an excellent night. I had so much fun it was ridiculous. Holden killed it, nothing more, nothing less. I got there at 11:30 and stayed on the dancefloor till close (except for the very end where I went up to the booth and said hello to Holden). Why? Because Holden is just that damn good of a DJ.

It's hilarious to think he got branded as a bad mixer earlier in his career. To be as impartial as possible (which is kinda like Brianna being impartial with Sander K but I'll try), there was really nothing wrong with his mixing. I mean yeah, I could hear the beginning of tracks a mile away, but it wasn't like he was so incompetant that I only heard sneakers in a dryer. But there were other TA's there last night. They could attest to that.

What was dissapointing was that there weren't more of you TA's out. I only saw Tom, Jay, that asian dude whose name I don't know, Brian BLAZINGMadTreesKid (who was totally sober last night by the way), and of course ExelonGT (dude man, ing post on here and say how amazing of a night you had..."but but-"nothing, just post). Where were the rest of you??!!

So yeah, I can't wait for Holden to come back. I wish I kept him around in a box like they did with gimp in Pulp Fiction.

I never had a problem with holdens mixing as it is only a part of the night... But the music he plays is a bit boring to dance too no doubt its good music but if i wanna dance id much rather pay to see danny howells sander k or some other dj that will make me dance... James holden is more of a listening experience.

And here is a picture of the latest nathan fake track hed play.

amazing, amazing night. i had 2 drinks around 1 and 3 o'clock and i was blasted- goddamn i'm such a 1 beer queer!! :p

holden will be a better mixer and EQer than sasha, come 1-2 years.

the he was dropping was so very danceable (tho you're right, DH just defines danceability like cap'n crunch defines cereal) and i busted few moves on the dance floor.

lost my jacket tho. :( guess that was my fault- i hid it behind a speaker thinking it'd be ok but it wasn't. no biggie.

Ive only seen Holden once from start to finish......two years ago at the old Glow in DC. I really like his style but im gonna have to agree with John....his music can be hard to dance to but it's awesome to listen to. I would have gone last night if I didn't have to work today....oh well, glad you all had fun.:toothless

ps Dani: coat check at Spirit costs what...$3?;)

It was only after 2:25am when the set became hard. I went nuts for a little bit, then I fell asleep somehow :( Thanks kodomony aka blueshift for giving Holden

Klinkenberg Vs. Holden Feat. Julie Thompson & Michael Jackson - Smooth Nothin' (Sultan & Tone Depth Vs. Global-Trance Re-Inforcement)

I think my friend will appreciate it ;)

Even I would have taken it to coat check for you. ;) Two years ago on NYE @ Avalon for Sasha. My friend Marissa hid her coat behind a bush outside and told the bouncers she left her coat check ticket in her friends purse who was already inside....so they let her in thinking she already paid and was leaving. Tickets at the door were over $100...but somebody stole her jacket and guess who froze their ass off?.....ME lol....I was nice enough to give her mine. :nervous:

I was there, I would have said hello to anyone if I recognized them. But since I've never seen what most TA's look like.....

It was OK. He really started going harder for awhile and I was surprised by that considering what I've heard from him on CD's and live sets. Some of it was pretty good, some real bangers in there, but some of it was a little too quirky for me. Maybe at first I liked to hear something different but then gradually I heard too much of the something different.

So.. good stuff and some kind of ho hum stuff.

Maybe if I was really bombed out of my mind on something I would understand all the bloops and bleeps.
