So I got frustrated last night...

Hey guys, last night I took the time to sit down with Reason and this book I bought called Reason Power, which basically tells you what every single little button on Reason does.

So it turns out that I finished my first Reason Track with a tutorial, it was crap it's just done to show the basic usage of things... but anyways I went to the next chapter and things got a bit complicated with all the going on

So I have 3 questions I'm hoping to find a simple answer for:

1) Is it useless to use REason without a MIDI controller, is that why I'm having such a tough time with it so far.

2) I downloaded Buzz Machines which is freeware and used by James Holden for production, I'm pretty much lost with it because patterns are all created with numbers. Question: Is it much better with a MIDI device

3) Should I just get a different software, easier for dummies and noobs like me. Basically all the musical knowledge I have comes from what I've learned in 2 years of being a DJ

Thanks All :D

Reason is fine, just dont give up, keep trying, you will master it eventually... And no, you dont need a midi device, that wont make things easier...

I just find it hard to believe that melodies and basslines and such can be created without the usage of a MIDI device, otherwise you are stuck with writing notes with the pencil tool, aren't you?

that kind of thing just eventually comes to you with practice. it took me a year to completely learn the software i use. it takes alot of practice. you can use your keyboard i believe to punch out notes, but its not very fun :(

it really comes down to personal preferance. i write out my notes most of the time instead of playing them. if i do record the notes, i usually edit them with the piano roll pencil thing anyway...

buzz is actuallly really easy when it comes to modular, object based production enviroments. you think those programs are hard...try Max/MSP. that little app has a steeeep learning curve. took me a while to figure that out. anyway, on topic...just experiment with different programs. find one that seems to be more comfortable. you'll never find something that works for you if you only spend a day or two playing around on the program and then decide its too hard. its something you have to continually work at. it takes a while to figure out, but once you have it all down, you'll be punching out basslines regardless if you have a controller or not. even if you DID have a controller, you would most likely have to edit the notes you punch in anyway, unless your a talented pianist/keyboardist, or you have some nice quantize feature (ableton has that...actually try out able, its a great program, ing easy to figure out aswell) i believe on the ableton website they have video tutorials, and they help a load! anyway, good luck.

imo, you just need to get a MIDI keyboard to make things a bit easier, especially if you're using that book!
