Last night, Pioneer sponsored Satoshi Tomiie's cd release party here in Osaka. They were also using the night to showcase the DJM-1000 and the EFX-1000.
The coolest part was the chillout room had a full DJ booth loaded with the 2 CDJ-1000MK2, a CDJ-200, EFX-1000, and a DJM-1000 to try out.
My impressions are that the DJM-1000 sounds incredibly clean, but in a clearly digital way. However, in combo with the EFX, the effects it produces are organic and seemless. The subtlety in the sound on the effects is quite nice, you can hear them extend cleanly through the entire range of sound. As for the DJM-1000 on the club system, the club last night is not known for good sound, but the mixer did the best it could for that system.
It was a bit overwhelming to have all that gear in front of me, especially being used to my DJM-600. The Pioneer rep helped me figure out how to use the stuff, and they only had SAW releases on CD, so I couldnt really play what I am used to and form a more concrete opinion.
Anyways, while I was messing around, Satoshi Tomiie walked up and started listening to some new cds on a freestanding CDJ-200. I talked him up a bit, and he gave me his impression on Xone 92/V6 versus the DJM. This is his exact quote...
"They are different. It isnt about better."
I asked if the Xone had better sound quality.
"The sounds they make are different. Its like the difference between a BMW and a Mercedes." |

| Well considering it was a Pioneer sponsored event one wouldn't really expect satoshi to criticize their products (not that the djm is a bad mixer). Still by stating that X92 is an awesome mixer in the midst of pio gear, says a lot about Allen & Heath. :) |

You know what, I had a similar experience when I was in Japan serving a tour.
I drove down to Fukuoka for a weekend and those guys were braking out freshly, plastic, wraped boxes of cdj 1000's right in the middle of the club and getting rid of their existing ones....... And this was in 2000 when the cdjs were just coming out in the US..
The funny things is that the existing ones were the house set and they broke out the new ones for a special guest dj. I didn't even bother asking why cause I knew that in Asia, respect, courteousy, and custom goes a long way......
Damn I wish I was back in Japan........:( |
