I sit in my first year theory class at Grand Valley State University, sobbing at what is flowing through my ears and mind. For, Dr. Lee Copenhaver, my professor, has shut off all light in the room full of approximately 30 music majors.
Now, I am a girl, an emotional girl at that, but I am not the only one touched by this extraordinary piece. I find myself crying even more because every soul in that room on that day was sobbing. Every hair on my body froze as the goose-bumps I am often familiar to creep up on my skin.
I breathe in the smell of the air, and perhaps the life in it, and I silently say, "Thank you, God. Thank you for creating me to feel such strong emotions." Through the sharing of this incredible piece, my love and passion for music and its importance in our world was confirmed, yet again. And once more, I was reminded of why there are people like me out there who find serenity and peace in the quiet sound of an orchestra or hum of a sweet melody.
More tears well up and cascade down my cheek as I take in this somber memory of a day of my freshman year of college...a day I paid tribute to the reason I was born: to teach music and install the love of it in the hearts of the next America.
