Disclaimer, I'm talking about the mp3s of my personally ripped cd collection.
Anways, in lets say James Holden - Balance 005 - Disk 1 - Track 1 - The MFA - The Difference It Makes (Original whatever)
Would the ID3 be this:
Title: The MFA - The Difference It Makes (Original)
Artist: James Holden
Album: Balance 005 - Disk 1
or
Title: The Difference It Makes (Original)
Artist: The MFA
Album: James Holden - Balance 005 - Disk 1
What's more politically accurate per se? Artist albums like Airdrawndagger or In My Memory are obvious, but in DJ mix compilations whats your preference as Arists and Title? I'm trying to organize my ID3 tags. |

| I'd say the second alternative |

if i rip them single track, i do
Overall artist - Album - track # - track artist - track name
but if its a single file i rip to,
Artist - Album (Disc?)
i tend to avoid ID tags, i just name the file how i want, and put my names in winamp to
$filepart(%filename%) |

Say for Ferry Corsten - Right of Way
Then I just put the "Trackno. Title (Remix)" in a folder called Right of Way
If a mix album, then "trackno. Artist - Title (Remix)
Examples:
14 PQM - You Are Sleeping (PQM Meets Luke Chable Vocal Pass)
01 Forever Today
I suggest the program: Mp3tag v2.30b from www.afterdawn.com wicked program ! |

The way I rip my CDs/Vinyl to mp3 and tag them is all linked to Discogs...
So let's say I'm ripping this: http://www.discogs.com/release/12492. Within Winamp/iTunes I will put the following info into an ID3V2 tag (V1 don't support long names)...
Title: Flesh (DJ Tiësto Mix)
Artist: Jan Johnston
Album: Jan Johnston - Flesh
Comments: Source: Vinyl <---- I like to identify for myself whether the song was ripped by CD/Vinyl/MP3 Download (LEGAL)
URL: http://www.discogs.com/release/12492
This way I know all the full details by visiting the website... keeps it easy, and consistent with Discogs (which I consider as my default).

| yeah thanks for the input. But for DJ Mixes who deserves or should be in the Artist field? The DJ mixing the cd or the track artist? |

Artist = Various
That's why I put the discogs link in the url.... it'll show who the DJ Mix is on the Discogs page.... |

that seems like the best way to sort them. i should do that too when i get to sorting my mp3s, which is prolly when i retire in about 50 years or so! ;)
and as for the thread starter: the second way for sure. the artist is the artist and the dj is the dj who mixed them. dunno why you'd rip them as separate tracks though. i'd rather rip one file and use cue files, much better that way IMO. |

The only time it is fit to put the DJ as the artist is when it is an artist album...
The GU compilations get tricky.... Sometimes I think they are labelled as "Various - Paul Oakenfold - Global Underground 007 (New York)" or something like that.... still the artist would be Various and the title would be Paul Oakenfold - GU 007 etc. |

hmm... you rip your cds as one file and use a cue sheet to navigate. Wouldn't that be a pain if you wanted to say listen to the 7th track right from the begining? Or are there programs that let you navigate through large mp3 files using cue sheets as a reference? I know there are cutsheet cutters, but cue sheet mp3 listeners? |

i *think* there is some sort of plugin for winamp that will allow you to navigate through a cue sheet and even name parts of a large mp3 file accordingly... i.e. an 80 min cd rip can have 12 different names (1 for each "track") |
