So now they want to ban fireworks? (pg. 2)

I'm not saying what side of the fence you or I are on, but the fact that tax cuts seem to be the trend these days its not easy for any government dependant services to get more money. Part of the reason they want to legalize pot is to decrease the cost of enforcement (from policing to judgement to punishment). Believe it or not it would cost tons of money to have police investigate every pop of a firework. Either on the right days or not. After all this babble, I still do not think they should be banned. We have had many years with great times with personal fireworks and no problems. Maybe this year was a freak occurrance, and why don't we see what happens on our next 2 holidays before we jump to any conclusions. The media likes a sad story to tell. |

a freak occurance or just the media with a slow news week?
You have to wonder sometimes....
As for more policing, i agree it would be better to have more police going after real crimes rather than pot smoking and drinking beer etc. This is why i dont think a ban on fireworks is a good idea. They should be punishing those that cause the problems instead.
Society seems to be on a quest to build a utopia these days not realizing that you can never ever have a 100% safe and risk free society. We used to understand that there were a few dummies out there and used to accept that. But like i said, people are very intolerant of anything these days. Just try having a large get together without music in any neighbourhood past 10 these days. If you dont get some ass complaining about people talking in your house then they will bitch about the cars parked on the street. |

Agreed.
We close down our cottage every year with fireworks and it's always an absolutely amazing time and I wouldn't want to have to give that up. I can fully appreciate the opposite POV however. Some people are just STUPID. Monday I went to a fireworks display and some stupid punk kids thought it was gonna be hilarious to shoot them at each other while around crowds of other people who potentially could have been hit. Now I'm not sure if it was the fact that I was still recovering from this weekend or the fact that I had brought my 2-year old cousin with me or a combination thereof but I gave them a piece of my mind. AND IT WAS A REALLY BIG F***ING CHUNK OF IT TOO. Turns out they were 15-16 in age and they stopped right away and apologized. It coulda been that I looked like a raging psycho when I yelled and swore (extensively) at them or it could have been that they didn't realize how dangerous what they were doing actually was. Either way - the bottom line is that with the use of ANYTHING that can be potentially dangerous - discretion and responsibility needs to be used. Apparently some people just need to be reminded of that fact more often  |

Less patience with stupidity and lack of common sense.
I mean, what kind of idiot thinks shooting fireworks at each other is funny? |
It's up to the government to protect the general public from stupid people. Firing a gun is fun but point it at someone and pull the trigger... it ain't fun anymore. That's why we have legislation for firearms. Fireworks may not kill you but when abused it becomes a firearm.
I live beside a massive field owned by hydro. There were some morons setting off fireworks and some of them landed in my back yard and in the middle of the street. Then even more idiots decided to set some off from a nearby playground. Like WTF?!??!?! You don't set off fireworks in the middle of a neighbourhood. I saw some of my neighbours go chase them away but they prolly moved to another location. There's always the big what if... what if one of those sparked a fire? That is totally unnecessary.
If people can't use fireworks responsibly then there must be some laws put in place to protect the rest of us. Of course it sucks for ppl who use them responsibly but this is for the greater good. Leave the pyrotechnics to the professionals dammit !!! |

We shouldn't put guns and fireworks in the same category. Yes they can hurt people, but to my knowledge they havnen't been successfully used in a murder or armed robbery. Yes people should be more intelligent, but honestly, should the use of fireworks fall on the government, and not parents. Parents (in gerneral not individuals) these days seem so eager to not accept any responsibilty for the actions of their kids. |

I have a better idea... put people who break the current laws in jail. Such as those who sell to underage and parents who let kids use them.
Thats how it used to work! |
then you prob start bitching about how people are getting jailed over it and ed our legal system is |

Interesting... so it would take murder or robbery with firworks for it to be considered a firearm? Lets see... they were responsibile for property damage, they have been linked to loss of life due to fire, countless number of injuries. Sounds like a firearm to me.
Funny how everything should be made the parents responsibily... it just won't happen. Kids will be kids... and there are more than enough s waiting to sell fireworks to kids to make a quick buck. |

Basically i'm saying I don't like the idea of banning them. Yes they can be very harmfull, and I agree that those who are selling to minors should be dealt with. But I will bet most of those kids got at the very least, the money for them, if not the fireworks directly from their parents. Just like when you sell a drunk a drink and he goes and kills someone in his car, the parents of the kids who caused this should hold some of the responsibility for it. |
