French in primary school, consequently can barely speak a word but understand quite a bit
German for 4 years, got an A at GCSE, dropped it :D (hated the language!!)
Italian for a year, doing a business certificate in it
Spanish for 5 years, almost fluent and still studying, probably will do something at Uni relating to it
Understand quite a bit of Portugese as well, and considering doing Latin next year |

French but not really....
I got force fed it in primary school, had to do it till 2yr at high school (I was actually one of the best in the class). Then I was the first year to be forced to take it at Standard Grade.
I don't like being forced to do anything so I acted like a total prick (teacher was a dumb b-itch too) in the class so much so that the guy I sat next to got moved to a diff class and we had two teachers in the class at all times. :p
And after a prelim exam they handed it back to me (illegal) cos I wrote a total of 2 lines then left. And my old teacher (who was marking it) knew fine I could do more than that when I left her 2 yrs before. And "if the inspectors see that it'll look really bad".
My teacher thought I was a dumb ass in all my classes but actually it was just hers (I told her so too, used to make a fool of her in class too... it was easy hehe).
My little bro got her after me and did the same she came out with "if you don't work at school you'll be nothing in life" he told her it was just her class he was an arse, she wanted proof, so he handed her his marks including the highest physics mark in the year. Suck on that. :p
I remember telling my aunt this story after hearing her talking about languages with my gran (wasn't paying attention). Forgetting that she's a french teacher....... "See this is the kind of people I'm talking about!" she said... apparently she was whinging about how people who are forced to do it up the class for other people.... opps.
Also after all that I had some french flatmates and while I could listen and pick up stuff I've forgotten basicly everything. As coup said how useful.... |

I had to do Latin and French at school.
Today there is more left from Latin than from French concerning my vocabulary. English had been my favourtie subject, which is the reason why I study it. Unfortunately I still often make lots of basic mistakes. One reason for this that studying English in Germany very theoretical: 80% of the courses are held in German. 70% is talking about grammatical things or Shakespeare, but we don't write or speak English very much. This somehow very frustrating...:whip:, because I really would like to improve my English. That's why I plan to go to England in one of the next years.;) |

Same here, I remember very little
I took german for 5yrs and french for 4, got a D in both, with no coursework at all (60% of the mark) as I missed a lot of Y11
I'm currently trying to learn spanish too, its much more useful than frog & german and comes in handy as I actually have a chance to use it twice a year |
