yes, it seems like the big time dj's have turned more and more over to cdr's when they go out to play, but i think that is more because they have new material thats not available on vinyl, rather than that they like the feeling of pushing buttons... the new vinyl emulation cdj's helps, but still its not the same...
i have seen tho still, even if the big timers play cd-r's, the bedroom dj's tend to be more over on the vinyl side, because thats more 'the real deal' imo at least. |

Well if you're a record shop owner and you don't understand the reasons why the bigger djs are playing cds then you won't have much success making a major transition in the market ( vinyl to cd ). But don't worry most record shops have no clue what they're doing with this and that it could be the end of them unless they work at it properly.
Now to the bigger djs and their cd playing habit:
1. Vinyl fabrication is more and more expensive, the margins are slimer, the promos get sent out to the bigger djs as CDR(s more and more often.
2. This constant battle for the freshest tunes has pushed the bigger djs to find ways to always be ahead. It used to be that a tune would not be for sale say in the US until at least 6 months after it's release in the UK; now the market is blurred. The exclusivity is non existant with the vinyl medium. Once it comes out on vinyl it's already an "old" track. CDR's are easier to spread at light speeds due to ease of fabrication.
3. Taxes Taxes Taxes; most major countries have in recent years been doing some nit picking fighting over " you tax my products I'll tax yours " and when a small market sector with few sales has to start taking a financial hit like that it can difficultly be diversified.
I could go on about this for quite a long time but since you are dense, fail to see the point, I will not bother much longer.
PS: You come in here wanting people's advice or thought yet you are displeased at the responses opposite to your beliefs that you are receiving. Grow up! It's called a public forum! |

I was just wondering if someone can shed some light on this subject of vinyl going out of style. I have noticed how cd's are taking over. I can fully see the better potential of CD's as opposed to vinyl but what I don't understand is how is the Dance Music Industry preparing for this change? I know that after the CD decks were made with CD-R compatiablity that all music indutries have taken a big loss due to illegal downloading and I don't see how much longer vinyl can last when all the major Dj's hardly even use them themselves. I was wondering in anyone has more indepth information on this and if you do please hit me a reply.
I would think a big part of Armin's, Tiesto's, and PVD's money comes from vinyl sells, especially with all the lables and sub-labels they own. But if they are not using vinyl any longer how can they expect all of us to keep buying them |
the biggest part of armin & co. income comes from gigs, not sales |

i saw a 6 hour set from Crystal method and fat boy slim, didnt see one CD. as far as CDJs beeing a "lasy way to get by just pushing buttons" it still takes some skill. and you can be super with your plats or you CDJ and still have crappy taste in music so i see the dificulty level at about the same. i live for vinyl, but i have respect for any DJ with any Medium. KEEP HOPE ALIVE :D
btw Fatboy Slim blew CM out of the water, by a long shot. that man puts on an awesome show, i suggest you see it if you get a chance.:toocool: |

| all i know is that i like to collect vinyl for myself. i enjoy the medium. if i was djing right now professionally...i'd definitely want to do it with vinyl for a couple of years just by principal hehehe...but i could see myself making the switch to like ableton live or something. |

The only reason so many people use CDs is because they get it like that on promo, if that, most of the time the companies just send the DJs a link to download all the new tracks.
Beginner DJs will still buy the vinyls, most majour djs have already switched over to CDs and Ableton live. I still buy vinyl, but I'm still a beginner DJ.
And like Omega said, vinyl is to ingrained into DJ culture to just dissapear. To many people have HUGE collections of records for it just to walk out one day, its going to be a long time before everyone progesses to CD and MP3.
And Ableton live isn't just "pushing a few buttons" it takes alot skill and huge understanding of how music is made to fully take advantage of that program. Don't be so ignorant with your assumptions, I'd like to see you sit down at ableton live and do ten percent of what Sasha can do with it.
Paul van Dyk and some other DJs use Final Scratch to play digital audio files off their PCs, but still use a Vinyl record to mix them.
There are so many choices in the market right now, that I think its a good thing. You can figure out what you want to do. People who do the scratching and DJ battle thing need Vinyl, people who are at the top of the chain need the latest tracks so they play CDs. And people like me, who enjoy collecting the records and learning how to DJ, still buy Vinyl and CDs.
Your record shop is not going to go out of business as long as there is still a demand for records, and there is. If there wasnt then half the websites that sell records would be out of business by now. |
