I agree. The most visible forms of patriotism are premised on the notion that you are superior simply because you happen to have been born in a particular country.

i find the australians are the same way. not as bad as the americans with the flags on shirts and stuff, but i have seen a few flags in front of some houses. also when you go to the supermarket, if something is austalian made it says so on every item. it seems like every item is australian made.

now i am not saying that what you are saying is wrong, i just find that australians are just as 'guilty'.

I would agree the whole flags on cars and shirts crap is overkill. Especially since the wind makes them all ty looking and you end up with a flag that looks like its been literally through war (dunno if that was the intent) a lot of older people do it here, as well as stupid ass bumper stickers, and all those ribbon things all over their car asses, and they aren't like aids ones and stuff they are like, american flag ribbon things? And i have my antibush patch on my bag and they all see it and try to kill me! because im "unamerican" for having an opinion....crazy ass americans. Their need to be superior is only followed by their need to constantly EAT, and watch tv. or maybe they are all tied i dunno.

That is more like nationalism... which alot of people in the US are, they say they are patriotic, which would be love of ones country, but to go and put down other countries or discriminate based on a persons country of origin compared to their own is nationalism.

yeah, we must distinguish between nationalism and patriotism.. There's absolutely nothing wrong with patriotism (if anything, it should be promoted) but nationalism should be stamped out.. There have been several threads on this very topic many times before so no need to get into detail again :)

The distinction exists in theory, but i find in practice the line is geting more and more blurred each day. Flag wavers who call themselves patriots are either nationalists or turn into nationalists at the drop of a hat (eg. the shapelle corby case).

that's actually kind of funny. what's funnier is that you took the picture through your screen window, so it looks like you were too afraid to "face the music" of the flag outside & is barred up or something.

or i just have an imagination:::)
