Nixon was going to be impeached.... he stepped down because he didn't want to be the first president impeached. |
And like i said, we need a process here that holds our officials accountable. Maybe not the exact system that the US has but this current government should not be sitting after all the corruption that has been revealed and that continues to occur. |

That process is called parliament. Parliament can pass a non-confidence motion thus disolving itself (this could even occure in a majority government situation if the outrage was strong enough). Failing such a motion we have a second process.... it's called a general election. |

right.... i could never see a government holding its own confidence vote unless forced in a minority situation. As for the election, well i would hope any democratic country would have this option. However giving a blank cheque for the next five years shouldnt be the only recourse. |

Nor could I, however, it is possible.
Giving a blank cheque isn't the only recourse... a non confidence vote is the recourse. If enough Canadians trully wanted the government dissolved and took the appropriate action to force their MPs to vote against the government then it would fall.
Unfortunately, for you Jay, the majority of Canadians do not feel as you do and/or do not feel strongly enough about it to take action and certainly not strong enough action to unseat the government. If there were daily protests in the streets and general strikes then perhaps something would be done, but there isn't. Why isn't there? Because the truth is we really don't give a damn about all this alleged corruption. Sorry to break it to you Jay but not too many of us see this as a big deal. |

i can never see this happening in modern canada for any reason.

Because Canadians want to stick their heads in the sand. Canadians dont seem to want to admit that what is supposed to only happen in other countries is actually happening right here.

and thats a sad sad reflection on our lackluster society. |

You can't be serious about that. He stepped down to avoid the public scrutiny and embarassment. Watergate is just another incident amongst the hundreds of questionable practices and acts taken during the Cold War. |

Public scrutiny and embarrassment obviously has no effect on our current sitting government |

Jay if we were actually in the clutches of a tyrannical government then we would certainly lash out. While Canadians are apethetic that apathy only goes so far. Moreover, just because you view things a certain way does not mean that anyone who does not agree with you is wrong, a coward, or simply ignorant. People may have very valid reasons why they do not see the current situation as being as dire as you do, however, since you dismiss any viewpoints contrary to your own you will never understand those reasons. |

i.e. the system worked
in contrast, the Canadian system is deeply flawed

as I pointed out in another post, what the Lieberals have done in the past 12 years is FAR worse than what Nixon did |

why would Martin step down when his popularity remains relatively high? (and please don't say "because it's the right thing to do" or I might fall off my chair laughing at how cute and ideological that would sound)
face it...the people dislike Harper more than they care about the ad scandal, as evidenced by the most recent Decima polls that show the NDP bridging the gap between themselves and the Conservatives with the Liberals enjoying a significant lead. |
So you're saying it's ok for prime ministers to do what Martin done? great example to the public wouldn't it be? |
