Pupil calculates success

He’s one of the top 10 high school students in Canada at mathematics and one of the top five in computer programming.

But you couldn’t tell that just by looking at 17-year old Elyot Grant, who is in Grade 12 at Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute in Kitchener. He’s not the stereotypical ‘geek,’ says Elvis Husic, head of mathematics at Cameron and one of Elyot’s teachers. He’s not someone who walks around with a pocket protector and pencils sticking out. Elyot is more likely to sport a cheeky T-shirt showing the faces of U.S. President George W. Bush and his father, former president George Bush, along with the slogan: Dumb and Dumber.

Being gifted at math is just part of who he is.

Elyot was recently awarded an honourable mention in the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad contest, Canada’s leading mathematics contest, which is run by the Canadian Mathematical Society.

That honour places him among the top 10 high school students in all of Canada.

He also placed among the top five in the country in the most recent Canadian Computing Competition, a really brutal two-day programming competition held at the University of Waterloo.

The University of Waterloo, where he plans to attend next year, has offered him a $25,000 scholarship.

Elyot’s parents knew they had an extraordinary child on their hands when he was six years old, bored on a long car trip, and driving his mom and dad crazy. His dad saw a sign advertising 145 shopping days left until Christmas and asked Elyot to figure out how many seconds that would be.

That would keep him quiet for a while, father Jamie Grant reasoned. After a few minutes, using just a pencil and paper, Elyot came up with the correct answer.

He came to Cameron Heights to take part in its demanding International Baccalaureate program. In Grade 9, he was taking math classes with students four or five years older than he was.

It says something about Elyot’s friendly, relaxed manner, teacher Husic says, that older students would go to him for help without any embarrassment.

Elyot expects to be at university for a while, studying math and computer science, maybe teaching or doing research.

But he’s not letting academics run his entire life. I know some students, and they work and work, he said. I hang out with whomever. I enjoy myself.
