OK so theres, FM, Analogue, VA, sound modules..

What the hell is a tone generator? Any of the above, or something else?

It creates raw waveforms. Like Sound Forge, or Cool Edit...that kinda stuff. They have software that's only for that purpose...to create raw tones. Check this one: http://www.nch.com.au/tonegen/ :gsmile:

So it just creates sines, saws, that sort of stuff? Sounds pretty limited to me. And isn't that what a analogue, VA and FM synths do anyway?

What about something like this? It evidently does more than just create raw waveforms for testing like that software.

Yeah, but those waves are more pure in my opinion. They sound universal, you know. Every wave on VAs is different...squares, saws, triangles, sines, etc...they vary in sound from synth to synth. From the ones I've used, the tone generators sound the same. Yes, they're limited but useful...I use sines along with kicks and powerful floor-shaking results come out, hehe. Those waveforms are just more pure IMHO and you can use them for other things like in samplers and stuff. I use the one in Sound Forge sometimes but I have never used what I come up with because I'm lazy and barely have time. :tongue2
