DJs: How do they travel?

Was just listening to the beginning of Sasha Live @ Homelands '99 set and Pete Tong said he flew in from New York on Concorde for the gig...see my avatar :toocool: Concorde actually allowed a DJ to spin in New York till very late on a Friday and then fly to Europe and spin early the following evening in London or Paris and a bit further in Europe later on  Also gives some idea of how much they get paid per gig if Sasha can drop $8500 on a one-way airfare :p

A friend of mine also flew back from Sydney with Judge Jules :wtf: Upstairs on a BA747...

Have you ever seen, flown or heard stories about DJs travelling...since the big guns fly so much it is pretty likely you could end up the same plane as one of them! I was looking through Sasha's gig diary and on the listed dates he was doing about 30,000 miles a month.

I presume they take their record box as a carry on ;)

They check their crates. Alot of DJ's dont have the same recognition as movie stars. When Armin Van Buuren came to chicago and sat down for a while with about 15 TA's... we were the only people there that knew who he was. Other people there looked at us taking pictures, signing things etc and were surely thinking "Who is that"

Thats why they can do it. Outside of EDM not many people know them....

Sasha probably didnt pay for the flight, the promoter did.

on my way home from WMC this year i talked to BT in 1st class.

I presume to Los Angeles?

20$ says alot of working class DJ's take trains and private cars (if the promoter pays for them) and fly business class...

FWIW Judge Jules was in business...

Ah ok, is that how it works for most DJs? I just presumed Sasha was wealthy enough to splash out....Theoretically he could have made the Homelands gig by not flying on Concorde. The first Concorde flight landed in London at 5.30pm and the first dayflight from New York at 9pm and it is about 90mins down to Winchester. Not sure what time he spun at Homelands. I presume the EM was pre-recorded from earlier in the evening.

Where is that nerd sign?

Are they back in business? Cause from what I remember they'b been removed from the market ... might have been reintroduced since then.

Anyhow the Concorde was a fast plane no doubt but so inefficient and expensive to operate. Damn shame.

The rocket was withdrawn from passenger service in October '03 although they were also temprarily taken out from July '00 to November '01 following a crash of one in Paris.

The safety record was second to none although Air France in particular had a few problems, one of which at the beginning of 2003 was a fuel leak and it landed in Canada with minimum amount of fuel remaining. This lead Air France to rethink its plans over operating Concorde...a few other things in its way

-massive drop in passenger numbers after 9/11, downturn in economy with less companies willing to pay for employees to fly on-board
-Airbus (the successors of the manufacturers) no longer willing to support the aircraft

A combination of the above lead to the withdrawal :(

Shame as it was a quality aircraft...even if it was cramped inside and not much more room than coach for a $12,000 return ticket

When I've flown to play somewhere I've always flown in coach, no big deal. I do wish I could bring my case as a carry-on but have no choice but to check it. 70 records won't fit too well under the seat ;)

I've driven from from Seattle to San Francisco (about 815 miles) to play a show but that was also sort of a road trip as well and it was a 4 day trip.

I picked up Hernan Cattaneo at his hotel for a show here in seattle a few months ago. Seeing as he only used cd's he had a little backpack he carried on which had 3 or 4 cd cases in it. I thought for sure he would still have a record bitch carrying it for him but he was by himself so of course i offered. :stongue:
