Everton to miss out on Euro seeding

There's a good chance Everton won't make the Champions League.
They have not been seeded for their Champions League qualifier and therefore could be drawn against strong opposition including any of the following:
Inter Milan, Ajax, Villarreal, Panathinaikos, Werder Bremen, Dynamo Kiev, Monaco, Sporting Lisbon etc...

Everton face the prospect of being paired with Inter Milan, Sporting Lisbon, Ajax and Monaco and there is also the possibility of a 'Battle of Britain' if they are pulled out of the hat with Scottish seeds Rangers or Celtic, if the latter get through their second qualifying round.
Formal clarification is still yet to arrive from UEFA but Everton head of communications, Ian Ross, said: "As we have not been involved in Europe for the past five seasons we hold no UEFA team ranking and therefore take the England ranking into the Champions League for seeding purposes."
"The current seeding list is worked out on the basis that teams such as Anderlecht, Locomotive Moscow, Dinamo Kiev and Celtic all progress through the second qualifying round.
"But even if that did not prove to be the case the ranking for Everton is still too low to give us a seeded place, which is an extremely unusual situation for an English team to be in."
Everton cannot be drawn against Manchester United, also in the third qualifier, because although the Old Trafford club are seeded they cannot face a team from their own country. |

| I'd put money on Ajax beating Everton though. Everton don't really play football, they're an ugly long ball defensive team. They're only in the Champions League because the quality of the English league is so poor at the moment. |

Greece played uglier football than Everton ever did, yet they won the Euro. Results are more important than style wanker.
Why do a lot of people here think the CL only belongs to a certain 'class" of teams? If that's the case, then why not just award teams like RM, United, Liverpool, Barca, Juventus, Milan, Bayern Munich automatic spots and not bother with the top teams in each league every year? |

I'm not disputing Everton should be in the CL qualifiers, they finished 4th fair and square. And if they win their qualifier, then they deserve a place in the CL.
I just think that qualifier is going to be a massive game for you (possibly the biggest game of your season) and looking at the list of teams there, it's a lottery really. You could get Inter Milan, you could get Trabzonspor, but most of the teams there are dangerous indeed. Everton finished 4th despite conceding more goals than they scored,which is quite unusual. I think the last team to get into Europe on a negative goals difference was Ipswich, and they were relegated the following season. I think Everton are targetting sensible players such as Forssell (a potential bargain at 3M) and Parker (hope Newcastle get him) but they have to be careful spending money they don't have yet.
Newcastle lost our CL qualifier two years ago on penalties and we have never really recovered since. It damaged us massively, we had just finished 3rd in the league, had a decent run in the second group phase of the Champions League and were looking forward to building on a successful season. Sound familiar? We won the first leg 1-0 in Belgrade but lost 1-0 at home and after exta-time we lost on penalties in front of our own fans. It felt like losing a cup final just a few days before the season began, the players and the fans were absolutely devastated. Unsurprisingly we had an attrocious start to the season, it damaged the team psychologically. |
