A couple of beginner questions

Hey, just got decks 3 days ago, was wondering if you guys could just answer a couple of quick questions for me:
1) One problem I've experienced is the tendancy for the tone arm to jump one notch towards the start of the track when I'm cueing the next track, more on some records than others. Is this normal? (I've got cheap decks :D) How can I prevent this sort of thing from happening? I just had to cut a mix short because EVERY time I tried to cue the next track it kept jumping back. Really irritating >:(
2) Does anyone have any advice as to how they stop the kick from being really loud in the middle of a mix? Turning down my high eq makes the track sound too empty and turning down the bass doesn't really make much of a difference. :P
Cheers guys!

1. Be more careful when you cue or up the weight on the tonearm. I have a few records that do this and I have to be very careful when I cue them, on a few of them I just cue off the second beat b/c it doesn't seem to want to jump as bad there.
2. Maybe adjust the mid a bit???, or tweak the fader levels so only one of the tracks is in fully at the same time?? Those are my speculations since I really don't have this problem. |

1) Good advice, cheers, I'll give that a go
2) Yeah, my mixer (probably just a £20 jobby, came in a DJ-in-a-box kit :D) doesn't have mid eqs! Lowering one of the deck's volume helps though.
Thanks very much. You've made a bad DJ a little better :D |

| As jaded, and as bad as this sounds, and although i'm glad you got your decks and .... but to solve both your problems, all you need is better equipment.... but keep practising too. :) |

i smell numark dj in a box set
i had this one too when i first started
i guess they are good to start with if your not sure you like spinning
you have to be very carefull when you handle those tables
they are very very sensitive to any touch or mouvement
and for the mixer...
you can really do anything
its a good setup to start with
if you ever get good enough to play at gig's be sure to rent yourself some technics before to practice cuz it doesnt feel the same thing at all
oh and another advice
when you will have to speed up one song be sure to use the label of the record instead of toutching the vynil part...it will keep it from skipping or getting it way to fast or too slow
you can also use the metal pin in the center of the record to speed up or down the song and its even less likely to skip |

Cheers for the replies guys
Yeah, it's a similar sort of thing to the numark dj in a box (made by ion instead). Just wanted to get it to see if I could dj at all ;) I'm really enjoying it so I'll probably save up over the summer and get a couple of CDJ 200s and maybe a better mixer.
How much difference can a good mixer make though? Everyone seems to be saying it's the most important part, so I guess I'm missing something, but as far as I can see all it does is cross fade and a bit of eqing :P |

that's because you have a mixer that only is capable of crossfading and a little EQing. my buddy has that same "box" set and i would highly recommend an upgrade. not to diss you stuff, but that mixer is terrible. if you don't have a ton of money, look for something in the $200-$350 range. |

#1, add more weight
#2, turn off the bass of the incoming track. |
