Soooooooo...I'm sick of my DELL laptop and I've decided that I want a new computer but when it comes to technology I'm as useful as on a bull so I'm hoping some of you can help me out.
I want a desktop, flat panel monitor (I know this much haha). I also need a large harddrive because I have a lot of music and I HATE LAGGING COMPUTERS...so if that means a fast processor or RAM or whatever the hell it is...then sign me up for the good . I also want DVD and CD burners (preferabaly in separate drives). A good speaker system is needed as well.
I'm looking to spend around $2k tops. If anyone has any recommendations as far as places to go to buy or manufacturers to look at it would be MUCHLY appreciated.
Thanks so much! :D :D |

I take it your current machine is out of date? Just out of curiosity, what model is it?
I'd personally recommend a Dell. You can get a pretty sweet system for under $2000.00... P4 2.80GHz, 533 FSB, XP Pro, 1GB (dual channel) RAM, 160GB HDD, 5.1 speakers, 19" flapt panel ultra sharp, IEEE 1394 (FireWire), SoundBlaster 24bit HD, etc... This would last you for a while.
Plus they always have good deals, like a free photo printer or digital camera if you spend $1400 or more, for example.

My advise.... get it made, from one of these small computer stores line ...they will 3/4 the price of what you will pay. warranty on the parts for a year is standard, and you get what you want....I got one made 3 years and its never screwed me yet....
mdg.ca and tiger direct are good too... better to go in the store though and negotiate.... |

These guys usually put computers together for cheap http://www.icct.ca/newsite/index.htm
Although I'm a big laptop fan and I don't know if you'd really like to go back from a notebook to a tower :nervous: |

My fiancee is the same as you (i.e. on a bull) so for her, peace of mind was key. She loves her Toshiba from Future Shop which she got for $2000 plus tax this past Boxing Day. Really fast computer (Pentium M) fully loaded.
You might want to check that out...it's really convenient to go back to Future Shop to fix your problem vs. going to a mom-and-pop store. However, I like to get my hands dirty (so I don't mind the smaller stores: try www.canadacomputers.com to get an idea of great prices) but I go for desktop PCs, not laptops. I've heard time and again that it's better to go for the big names when it comes to laptops, because parts aren't interchangeable like a desktop's are.
One huge word of advice: IGNORE WALKINDUDE'S SUGGESTION OF MDG...this is the WORST quality out there...as told by several of my techie buddies, one of whom actually worked there and told me of their practice of filling their PCs with USED parts and selling as new... |

If you're willing to spend 2k, get the machine built. You'll save money by buying parts, you can get a cool looking case, warranty on parts is standard, and you'll be able to get better components for your money. Is gaming a concern for you at all? If not, then you'll prolly save some good cash by not getting a powerful video card.
I'm not really a fan of any manufacturer, but if you really want to stick to premade boxes, then Dell is the way to go. Good support, and not TOO expensive, and they give you fairly good options on upgrades when you purchase. If you chose to go that route, order when they have promos, and you should be able to get a very nice machine. |

See when I'm told that I should "build" it...this is me ---> :nervous:
I really have no idea what that would entail :(
And no...computer gaming is of no issue...I've got my XBOX :D |
