So are they finally in? And who has been taken off from the UCL so Liverpool can have his own spot? |

Is Everton going into the first round too? Because seeing that Liverpool qualifyied with no country protection, I think this could be an interesting match. |

Everton go in on the 3rd round and are the only unseeded english team, so they're the only english team we can meet
I can see it now its fete. We will play them and beat them in the 3rd, and there will be ing MURDER |

| It's a good decision. :) For me the champs should have an opportunity to defend their trophy. |

I can see one out of Man Utd, Liverpool and Everton not qualifying, probably Everton because they are unseeded.
If Liverpool get into the group stage alongside Man Utd and Everton, then Liverpool being there will cost the rest of the English clubs millions in TV revenue despite their share being cut. Putting them in the 1st qualifying round was the best they could offer because they have probably booted some tiny eastern European team out and given them Liverpool's UEFA Cup place. There was no way they were going to repeat what they did with Real Madrid after the outrage that caused.
UEFA have been a bit inconsistent here, because in recent years it was decided that the World Cup and Euro Championship holders should earn their right to defend the title by qualifying. France had to qualify into the European Championships to defend their title and Brazil have to qualify into the World Cup to defend their title. Will those rules now be changed - again? |

I'm divided on this one really. The idea of the trophy winners defending their title seems sensible, but international sides don't get any special privileges for winning tournaments, neither do domestic cup winners. Do you think Brazil shouldn't have to qualify for World Cup 2006, or Greece shouldn't have to qualify for Euro 2008? I'm not sure to be honest. |

| its a little different with those national championships, cause in 4 years, a country can turn to absolute e. at least with the champions league, its a year by year thing so if the team that wins it were to play again, they have a better chance of winning it again than say greece has at winning the euro championships again |

Thing is, people talk about 'defending the title' as if it was boxing or something. But no club has won back to back European cups for 15 years.
I just think UEFA should make it more clear. Because it used to be the case that in international football the holders automatically qualified next time round, but then it was decided that should change, and now they must qualify like everyone else to defend their trophy. You could certainly argue that Liverpool have been given the chance to qualify and have failed. Now UEFA are saying that victors should automatically enter the next tournament, not long after they changed the international rules to the contrary. Firstly, they should make their minds up, and secondly, why didn't they change the rule permanently after all the controversy of letting Real Madrid in? Let's be honest they haven't really got a clue. |
