Read the manual for your type of machine or go to the website. I have had various ones and they were all different. Now I have Verizon Voicemail and that is a completely different # that you call and then you enter your
# once you are on that line, then u also need to know ur password if you set one. If you didnt I dont know how that would work.

voice mail = no land line = affordable for a single person living in the city that works 9to5 and has nights and weekends that start at 7 (i love you sprint) = more money to pay for premium digital cable = VoIP + mic + speakers<>landline = pwned!

I'm guessing ur refering to home voice mail, and not just any random machine u bought from the store, correct? If so, who is your service provider? I have Verizon and they provided me with an additional number that i call to check my messages when i am away from home, i call the number than just enter my passcode, but u can also do it by calling ur phone number and waiting till ur vm picks up.....but again, it depends on what provider u have ;)
