inspiration and motivation...

Some questions for you...

Where do you usually get your inspiration from?
Is it other music? A certain mood you're in? Maybe a particular scenario you want to turn into sound? Some imaginations/thoughts coming to your mind?
Which are the best places/activities to get new ideas? Do you maybe just 'compose' new melodies when showering?

And what is it that motivates you to keep on producing?
Is it the money you'll eventually be able to recieve one day? Is it the reaction of listeners liking your sound? The need to express yourself musically? Some kind of self-perfectionism that makes you want to become one of the best one day?

Well, to me it usually starts with a picture, often in my mind. A picture of a certain world, getting more detailed as I explore it in my mind. I often have the sounds connected to the scenario directly coming to mind as I would call my imagination quite alive. If I was a good painter/drawer whatever, I would provide a picture of the imagination in connection with the track(s).
The best way to get new ideas is to me walking through the city at night or in the very early morning, when it is quiet.. It gives me a feeling of freedom, allowing me to develop my thoughts without disturbance.

I get my motivation probably from my need for self-expression. It's a great feeling being able to finally share my visions with others in such a fun way. Yep, after all it's simply the fun that motivates me. I found no other hobby I could spend that much time into without getting bored. There are simply endless possibilities, so it is very unlikely I will get bored one day :D

Your turn! :toothless

Yep, same here- I don't complain if I get some bucks with my music, but self-expression comes first :)

its all about progressing as I produce for me.. as long as my tracks keeps building and i dont hit any brick walls on the way.. i complete a track in a couple of days with constant work..

but if I open my sequencer and hit thaty brick wall immediatly.. i quit the sequencer.. so its all or nothing for me..

Yeah, it's mostly self-expression for me too. I would never like to work with it though, I don't want this pressure over my head to constantly be able to produce kickass tunes. I'd rather do it as a hobby, even if I'd one day be a pro.

I get most of my inspiration from people I meet. They symbolize a special mood, or what you'd call it, and then the melodies just pop up in my head and I try to follow that mood as much as possible when writing the song :)

Sometimes I'm just in the mood. I play around on the piano, find notes that fit together, then I think "what would go well with that?", so I add more, and more, and then it builds itself like that. That 'image' in my mind is shaped around the music, and not the other way around.

Normally I get the same feeling out of producing as I get out of listening, though producing creates a stronger emotion.

I listen to music all day, and when I'm not hearing it through my ears I'm imaginating it. It's always there, even in my sleep. When dreaming I create melodies, rhytms and beats. I always remember my dreams, and I also have lucid dreams from time to time, so most of my inspiration comes from my dreams. And sometimes during the day I just start dancing around like a fool creating a rhytm in my mind. The problem is to get it down on paper (or MIDI in our case), and in time I hope to learn that.

I also get an image, an idea. Like for example I want to create a track that imcorporates House-type vocals togheter with Psy-Acids, or whatever. And then I do that. I brainstorm does Ideas though, so not really inspiration one can say.

Then you got the motivation part. Producing IS the motivation. Really, I don't need to motivate myself to sit 5 hours a day producing music, I do it anyway, it's one of my only real joys in life.

cheers, nice thread
