Question regarding RANE MP24Z mixer.....

Hey guys and girls,
Recently, I just purchased a Rane MP24Z mixer in good condition for about 3 hundred bucks. Normally, I wouldn't have bought this kind of mixer, but I figured I'd never come across a deal like this again.
So anyway, the hook ups in the back of the mixer are a little unfamiliar to me. I have a few questions, if anyone has the time and is willing to answer them for me:
1) I noticed that there are series of hookups in the back for "Switch loops" and "Main effects" loops. Now, I don't have an efx board or a sampler; all I have are two turntables, two cd tables, and a mixer. Do I even need to worry about these hookups since I don't have an efx board or sampler, or can the hookups still be of use?
2) I hvae a CROWN XLS-602 amp that I hooked the RANE mixer up to. Now, my old mixer was a simple Gemini PS-01 mixer. The hook up between my old mixer and my amp was connected in the following way: I had these two separate black wires (each of which had regular rca-type connections on one end, and XLR plugs on the other end that plugged into the back of the amp where the two separation inputs where the two XLR inputs were located. So basically, on the old mixer, I took these two wires, and plugged each of the non-XLR sides into the back of my mixer, in the area where it said MASTER. One wire was hooked into the L side under Master, while the other was hooked into R. However, the Rane mixer I just bought seems a bit different. I'm still using the same wires I used to hook the old mixer up to the amp, but now the connection is a bit different. The Main outputs on the rane mixer have two of the XLR inputs (like those that are located on the back of the CROWN amp, as previously described), not the regular rca-type of plug-ins located in the back of the gemini mixer. Now, since each of my cables consist of the XLR plugs on only one side, I kept that side plugged into the amp. However, the other sides of the cables with the regular rca-type of plugs couldn't be plugged into the main outputs on the rane mixer (since that area of the rane mixer only accepts XLR plug-ins). Therefore, I plugged the cables into the back of the rane mixer where it says "Tape out". Now, I tried everything out, and the mixer seems to be working. However, the only problem I'm having is that I can't utilize the main Bass, mid, low and high controls on the upper right hand side of the rane mixer. Also, whenever I raise the master level volume on the mixer, it doesn't affect the volume of what's being played. Instead, there's only an increase in the lights on the "peak program meter" located directly beneath the main bass, high, mid and low control. However, there's no increase in the actual volume. Bottom line, the main bass, high, mid and low controls aren't working, and the main level volume on the mixer isn't working (so I can't adjust volume on the mixer, but only through the amp). The only things that are working are the 4 channels through which I mix.
My question is: Do I need to change my connection in the back of the mixer so that the connection between the mixer and amp is no longer from "tape out" on the mixer to the main inputs on the amp, but is instead from "Master output" on the mixer (where the XLR plug-ins are) to the main inputs on the amp (which are also XLR plugins)? If so, I'm guessing that means I need to get cables that have double sided XLR plugins, instead of one sided XLR and one side regular rca-connection?
I really hope this long-winded explanation makes sense, becuase I'm not even sure I understand it myself. I'm just trying to learn the basics of hooking up a bedroom setup.
I'd really appreciate some kind of advice (if anyone has any).
Thanks for the time,

sorry I didn't read your whole explanation .... bit too long tbh
So you have a Crown XLS-602 amp ( which has Xlr inputs and binding posts/speakon outputs )
And you have a Rane Rane MP24Z ( which has Xlr and jack outputs but with Tape out ( pre or post eq )).
You have several options:
1- plug Rca cables into Tape out POST and xlr into amp ( I'm assuming that may have been the way it was with your old mixer Rca-Xlr cable )
2- plug jack cables into Main outputs and xlr into amp
3- plug xlr cables into Main outputs and xlr into amp
Rca:
Jack
Xlr
in regards to the effects loops if you have nothing to plug into them don't worry about them. |

The way the tape out is working is normal, that is how most mixers handle the "record out". If you want it to behave more normally by using the main outs you will need to use the XLR connections. |

The "Tape Out" RCA outputs are line-level only and designed that way for recording purposes. They also bypass some inputs like Mic, so you won't be able to use a microphone, and probably your tone controls and stuff. You need to connect to "Main" or "Amp" outputs only. Might be XLRs.
Also, read up on balanced and unbalanced lines/inputs/outputs, as this will determine what type of cables you'll need. |
