references help, but a CV beefed up with the right Experience you'll get interviews heading your way.

From my job hunting experience(which goes back in MAY This year) employers didn't look at my portfolio with certificates and qualifications.

All my interviews weren't interviews(as quoted over the phone), they were induction tests, I turned up for my interview, smartly dressed up with my portfolio, got a sheet flicked at me to fill in my personal details when they're already on the CV, then do a test for the position, exchange some small talk then leave.

None of my past interviews didn't look at my portfolio or gave an orientation of the premises nor talked about their company on how the operations go about.

So how good is your CV?? :)

Well, haven't got that much working experience, but I've got an MSc. in Computer Science and some additional extracurricular activities (apart from drinking beer all day) on my CV.

sorry to take it back on topic :p

im going to take a trip to bham and take a look around
ive heard its not the nicest of places....anyone got any opinions on that?

are there any other major cities i should consider instead?
est
I reckon most major British cities are in teh same league as each other. Edinburgh, Brighton and Leeds are a bit nicer though imo. Depends what you want in a city tho (e.g. London is good for clubs but not good for living expenses).

Sorry for hijacking this thread once again, but could anybody here give me a reasonable salary indication (per annum / per month) for a job:

- in IT;
- for someone with an MSc degree;
- with little to no working experience (< 1 yr.).

Would probably be something like a tech support job, and I've found quite a few on reed.co.uk, especially the ones where they want to hire someone who's fluent in Dutch were interesting.

Gross? That's a bit disappointing (and I'm sure I've seen jobs offering more on reed). If net, then it's reasonable :)

i think that if you're not looking for a bar job (or similar) it'll get tricky to find a good job. i moved here 3 months ago (from sweden) and i have a job working as a programmer in london. but i got that job even before i made the move to england.
i have a friend who is looking for a programming job and it's not going very well for him (he's now beta testing games for EA instead) but of course he doesn't have any real work experience.

Also, do the flat share-thing because that's the ONLY way to live here :). it's fun and it's a great experience. and you get instant friends (which would be hard living by yourself in a boring studio apartment).

good luck! :)

Thanks for the help! I have not decided yet whether I want to move at all though, first thing I need to find out is whether there is any chance of me getting a decent job over there anyways (for me, having a job before I even move there is much preferred as well). Beta testing games does not sound like a bad job for a while though :p
