(For those who saw the Arizona thread, this'll be the last in the US I promise)
I'm thinking of applying internationally for PhDs next year, and one uni I'm thinking of applying for is the UCSD. They have a huge biotechnology focus, and thats my area of expertise.
So, I was wondering, whats San Diego like to live in, is there much nightlife etc, is it far from other major cities. (and what are the birds like?)
Also, anyone who goes to the U of Cali (SD campus especially), whats it like? And if you live on campus is it any good?
Anything else I should know?
Cheerio, and thanks in advance!
oh, and if theres anyone from Arizona who sees this, same questions apply for Tuscon and the U of Arizona. Thanks |

dude, san diego is one of the universities that i was considering transferring into...UCSD is a great school, especially if you wanna have anything to do with biology/biotech/biochemistry...
now UCSD itself is not a party school, althought it's cousin, Cal State San DIego is definetly a party school.
san diego has a booming night lift, and spundae is now pushing hard to gain a hold of the growing scene in san diego...
you should go down there once before you make your decision, if for no other reason than to have fun during summer at one of the best beaches in southern california... |

The campus @ UCSD is in north La Jolla close to the cliffs. There are a lot of options for living around the area. It is not a party school. SDSU holds that distinction, (plus one of the best business departments on the west coast).
Most people who move here fall in love with San Diego. It is very easy to commute (a car is a must). The beach nightlife scene has always been live but the emergence of the downtown scene is what has made this city much more attractive.
Feel free to pm me with any questions or help you need. I'd be more than happy to help. |

Thanks guys,
Damn, San Diego sounds awesome!
Have to have a good look at the groups based at UCSD, hopefully there's something specific that takes my fancy.
Although , you guys get ripped off for education fees!
Anyone else like to add their two cents? |

So why is a car a must? No public transport, or just ease or what?
Cos remember, I'm coming from overseas, need moey for rent etc, a car will be pretty low down the list......
I really like the sounds of San Diego though |

San Diego is a city of suburbs like all of southern California.
True there are areas of concentration i.e. beach areas and downtown but in order to commute via mass transit the time it would take normally is prohibitive.
Here we have trolly lines and buses. And up by UCSD there is only buses. See http://www.sdcommute.com/
Sorry but a car or having access to one is a must. |

| I moved to San Diego from Finland and lived there for over nine years. Needless to say I fell in love with the city....Being very independent but not having a car in SD made me pretty unhappy in the beginning (public transportation sucks in SD!) so if I were you I would do anything to get a car. SD has a very laid back atmosphere and UCSD has a really good reputation. Nightlife used to suck but it's getting much better now. Plus LA is only two hours away so you can find more good clubs there ;) |
