researched it for 2-3 weeks, came up with Averatec 3250. won't bother with full specs, but pretty sweet for the cost...
AMD Athlon XP-M (@1.6GHz), 512MB RAM, DVD+/-CD-RW, XP pre-load, pretty small too. 4.3lbs, 1" thick. not bad for a grand (they threw in an epson 3-in-1 for free too...)

(fruityloops and reason gonna be first things loaded...!)

(like toshiba, but way too big or costly to lug around campus)

It's because people carry their laptops everywhere over here. EVERYWHERE. Weight is important.

question: does everybody over there have weak knees?

because we all have one leg shorter than the other, we're all either chronically obese or borderline anorexic, and because we have reverse size-envy when it comes to electronics. oh, and we don't require a small trailer and a coal-powered steam engine to run our technology (that's tek-naw-loh-gee for you slower folks are just getting the hang of industrialisation.)

and i'm no gamer for christ's sake, this is a workhorse laptop mostly for school and maybe music production on the road. i don't need the latest 3billion GHz monster. whadya want, i paid $1000 CDN.

not bad for the price; i remember laptops like that were like $1600 just last year. but i agree, a small laptop is a must. i mean, why? why in god's name would you WANT to carry a big laptop if there is something smaller on the market?

Prices in laptops have dropped so much. You could get one for like 500 bucks now. Granted it wouldn't be the best but it's quite impressive when you consider these things used to cost like 2 grand minimum years ago.

And if you're going to carry it with you no doubt you want it to be lightweight cause chances are you'll already be carring books, a bag, and what not and it all adds up to half a ton which isn't much fun to lugg around.
