What is that star to the north-north-west of the moon?

Question for all the astronomy buff'ers: What is that star to the north-north-west of the moon?
It must be a sun or some planet for it to be that close to the half-moon and be so bright.
Fill me in - I'm lookin' at it and getting all fired about about the goodness of being alive and I want to spread the news....
(Look in the western sky at the half-moon and look at the 315 deg spot and you'll see the bright bastard) |

No. I am never high.
Before the current clowds took place if one had looked out towards the west, att the 9-to-10-o-clock-ish position in relation to the moon one could have seen an amazing star(sun)/planet...
It is gone now.
As they'd say back on the ranch: y'all missed it. |

| I believe Mars is supposed to be closer than ever to earth than it ever will be in our lifetime and that of our kids. It was really close last year (or was it the year before) when we had the blackout. |
