t'as raison, ca serait le vrai bordel ici. mais la ville perdrait son charme sans l'hiver et les 50cm de neige dans chaque trottoire

Justement. Montreal, c'est la ville parfaite as is. Now if only I could find a job there so I could move back when I'm done

The Winter in Montreal adds to our diverse opportunities,

Surrounding montreal we have great ski/snowboard mountains, Rinks,

If you ever looked at the city on a clear crisp winter night the snow/ice glistens and adds to the beauty.

We usually only have a total of 2 weeks that are -40.

i honestly don't care that much about winter anymore. I'm not that affected by it.

when you have a car, you don't wait for the bus or walk for kms to get to places. The car gets hot in 30 seconds max. snow? so! winter tires, big engine, you're good to go.

and to change your mind, book a week or two somewhere in the south because people over here can afford it.

of course, if you're a student and/or strapped on cash, yes winter is harsh. But if you have a half decent job, winter is not an issue.

I can give you some perspective from another Pennsylvania native. I grew up near Pittsburgh, and now live in Erie. I visited Montreal for the first time last month to look for an apartment because I've been accepted to McGill for a masters degree. Here are my observations:

Apartments are cheap. We got a one bedroom just off Ste Catherine, near Ste Mathieu downtown for $700 CAN a month ($570 U.S.) . Everything you need is right there- grocery, blockbuster, mall, strip club, bars, etc. Unlike downtown Pittsburgh- tumbleweeds, maybe the occasional transvestite prostitute or crackhead. Downtown Philly has more going on - but way overpriced and not safe.

We went to Chez Cora on Ste Catherine East Sunday morning. Much to our surprise, there were clubbers just coming out of afterhours at 10-11 am, eating breakfast along side gay people, along side families of four. Tolerance is a beautiful thing.

Many of the apartment buildings smelled of marijuana. When being showed the apartments, landlords didn't seem to care. At night, people on Ste Catherine E just standin around smokin a joint. In the U.S.- you go to jail- can't get student loans or grants for such horrific offenses.

Should you wish to have a family someday, you can live in the city and send your kids to public school. Try this in Pittsburgh or Philly and see where your kids end up. Plus, you won't have to make that wretched drive from the suburbs.

The girls are hot hot hot. Philadelphia girls are trash. Pittsburgh girls start families the minute they graduate from college, thus the 80% male 20% female ratio when you go out in Pittsburgh.

Montreal is bumpin all hours of the night. So many bars, clubs, restaurants, museums- whatever you want it is there. As you are aware in Pennsylvania, everything must close at 2Am- no afterhours really exist unless you have a keg at your house.

In short, Pennsylvania suffers from inefficient, fragmented government, people that want to live in gated communities and drive Chevy Suburbans, people that are intolerant, cities that are among the top in the nation for population loss, and a lack of real night time activities for the young at heart.

Our governor "Fast" Eddy Rendell insists on spending taxpayer money for building more and more highways and sewer projects surrounding and radiating from our cities that will only make sprawl even worse. PA urban cores continue to decline, leaving only poor minorities and bad schools. Eventually, infrastructure of "inner suburbs" will decline as infrastructre- water/ sewer pipes, schools, etc.- need repair. Sprawl will continue to the outer suburbs.

In the meantime, major issue in Harrisburg today is "how to reduce college binge drinking". They want to put ID tags on kegs of beer so they can track who is buying them. What bull.

Tony, good post. As a fellow Pittsburgher, I whole heartedly agree with almost everything you said, although you were much too kind.

The ratio of men to women in Pittsburgh when you go out is closer to 10 to 1 than 4 to 1, and most of the time, they're ugly. The nightlife is absolutely non-existent, unless you enjoy cheesy clubs that play cheesy music, with people that go ape over hip hop, R&B, top 40, and Sandstorm.

Pittsburgh's population is constantly decreasing, young people are leaving in droves, our senior citizens are taking over, and soon enough, we'll be Miami without the beach and the hot chicks. Forbes magazine came out with the best and worst (large) cities for dating, and I'm sure you're aware that Pittsburgh ended dead last. Nearly 20% of the population needs to wear Depends now.

To make matters worse, the city is going bankrupt, public transportation is being cut to "save money", but meanwhile, they're busy building new stadiums from tax payers' money. A far as I'm concerned, Rendell can suck a or three.

Anyway, on a much brighter side, I'm almost done and leaving as fast as possible back to Montreal. And by the way, you live about 30 seconds walking distance from my house (St Mathieu and just below Sherbrooke), so next time you're in town, let me know and I'll make sure to introduce you to the entire Montreal gang. Take care and best of luck with the Masters.

dude, i completely agree with everything you say about pa... ever visit the northeast??? HORRID. granted both pitt and phila are both wretched and nasty, however, they at least have somewhat of an urban feel to them... come check out wilkes-barre/scranton lol, that is ALL i have to say. i need culture change ASAP!!!!!!!
how long did it take for you 2 pa guys to get your student visa stuff altogether?? the one program i was checking out starts in october. think i have enough time, or would i be better off waiting until january?
tonybologna
I sent my stuff to Quebec Immigration and they had my study permit back to me in about 4 weeks. You also need to apply for a study permit fromImmigration Canada, but you can do that whenever you cross the borrder. They give you the study permit on the spot.

If your program starts in October though, chances are you are passed the deadline to apply to the school. If not, I would take immediate action.

From what it sounds like, Scranton/Wilkes Barre is about the same as Erie. I was at a training session for a previous job in Harrisburg one time, and there was some girl bitching about how people from Jersey/ NYC were moving around Scranton and they are ruining the lifestyle for the people there. She said they drive too fast and honk when the light turns green. Of course I kept my comments to myself...

no i believe the deadline goes until the start of the program, as long as its not full. i think this week i'm going to start making phone calls about admitting myself/loans/etc.

omg people here may as well not even drive cars, they should all just have jazzie wheelchairs, because its as fast as they go anyway. lol yellow light? might as well be red.

also, i talked to my friends and everyone is supportive of my idea, so they definately want to come with me to check things out in august. i'm really getting excited about this!!!!!! hope you guys are ready to depennsylvaniaize another one!!!!

just out of curiousity as well, when i have my student visa, does that make me a partial citizen or something along those lines, or not at all?? just because my mother is all draft paranoid and was asking these questions lol. i told her i'd still be an american citizen and that there will prob be no draft, but who knows with how crazy bush is...
is it very difficult to become a citizen if i decide i want to stay after finishing my schooling? its certainly something i'd consider.
