Harmonic Mixing (require musical knowledge)

Hey guys

I've just started into harmonic mixing, and boy does it make a difference. I've keyed a lot of my tracks, and have been experimenting with key changes.

Obviously, the root, perfect 4th and 5th, and relative keys work the best. How about others though? I did a fair bit of jazz improvisation in my younger years, and although the chords were a lot more complicated, there were definately more changes than just these basics.

So, I've been experimenting with the minor 2nd and minor 3rd of a major (ie C major --> D minor or E minor), and the major 6th and major 7th of a minor (ie A minor --> F major and G major. Does anyone else use these, or others?

Cheers

Hey DickyJ

Sounds like you have a good background to start doing this.

The thing with trance if that's what you play, then you tend not to find that much that goes in a major key. There are a few and you can do some very nice key lifts with them when you come across one for sure.

A lot of the guys will use the 4th and 5th like you said, but there are other combinations too.
If you take a standard Bare' guitar chord, in principle you can apply this school of thought. In theory you can use the notes harmonic and all other manner of combinations, the only thing you really need to be careful of when doing this sometimes is to make sure that the track coming in isn't too busy so that you don't have any established melodies that may be using different non compatible scales.
You can use most of the notes in the chord and they will achieve one thing or another. Then it's just a question of understanding the order.

As I'm sure you already know, just because a note fits well with the root it doesn't necessarily mean that it will fit with the other notes in the scale.

You can for example go from a Gm to A#m and create a lift in energy and still get away with having the tunes bubbling along together for a while.

Take time and experiment with it, but keep in mind that one key aims with harmonic mixing is to create flow and emotion and sometimes although something are musically correct for one music style they may not translate well into trance.

give us a shout if you want some more info. Got a busy weekend though so will have to respond on Sunday.
